Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s fastest-selling game ‘so far’

When it launched last October, Alan Wake 2 was noted as a superb follow-up to its cult Xbox 360 predecessor. Visually, it was something to behold. However, being quite a graphically demanding game meant people with older hardware were left out—until now.

Ahead of launching, Alan Wake 2 made the news because it required graphics cards with hardware support for DirectX 12 Ultimate's Mesh Shaders feature. That left unsupported GPUs like NVIDIA's GTX 1000 series and AMD's RX 5000 Series in the dust.

Alan Wake 2 is a wild ride in nearly every sense of the word, and to match the game's oddball energy, composer Petri Alanko used some, err, unconventional 'toys' to bring the nightmarish soundtrack to life. 

After 13 long years, Remedy’s Alan Wake finally received a sequel, and it has been a success, managing to sell a million units by December 2023.

Speedrunners usually skip anything in games that can shave valuable seconds off their runs - from cutscenes to entire levels - but one record chaser sacrificed precious time to perform Alan Wake 2's now-iconic musical number. 

The Gran Turismo series has never failed to hit the mark for Sony from a commercial standpoint, and it looks like its newest instalment is also continuing to see strong sales. Circana’s recently-revealed sales charts for the month of January in the United States revealed that the racing sim had jumped back into the top 20, on the back of which analyst Mat Piscatella has provided some further details about the game’s performance in the region.

Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that Alan Wake 2 will be adding its long-awaited Photo Mode as part of a free update «somewhere around spring» of this year. Survival-horror game Alan Wake 2 was released last year to critical acclaim and won multiple awards at The Game Awards 2023. Remedy has released multiple updates for the game since launch, including a rather substantial one that added a New Game Plus mode.

The 20 best-selling video games for January 2024 have just been revealed, showing which titles have drawn in the most customers since the start of the year. 2023 was pretty eventful for the gaming industry, both in landmark events like Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard buyout finally being completed and the releases of some highly-anticipated titles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Starfield are just a few of the chart-topping games released in the past year.

From New Game Plus to Chapter Select, Remedy Entertainment has added a few notable new features to Alan Wake 2 with free updates since its release in October, and the developer has now confirmed that another one of those is on the way.

Fans want a physical edition of Remedy’s horror sequel Alan Wake 2, but the critically acclaimed game isn’t exactly struggling on digital storefronts. The title has now sold 1.3 million copies worldwide, making it the fastest-selling title in the Finnish firm’s history. It previously reached one million units by the end of December 2023, so it looks like word of mouth has been good through the first two months of 2024.

Remedy Entertainment recently announced that Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.3 million units worldwide, becoming the studio’s fastest-selling game to date, and though the acclaimed survival horror title has yet to fully recoup the money that was poured into its development and marketing, it looks like it’s gotten off to a strong enough start that Remedy is already planning for more Alan Wake in the future.
