With the approval of Microsoft’s efforts to acquire Activision Blizzard looking almost certain to close by next week, Activision Blizzard is beginning to discuss what might happen next in terms of its games and Game Pass.
The Activision Blizzard team shared an update via X (Twitter) today, responding to having received questions about what might come next, particularly with Microsoft Game Pass. With the deal still not yet officially closed, there are no solid announcements just yet, but there are a few details as to what might happen.
“It’s awesome to see anticipation building for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® III. As we continue to work toward regulatory approval of the Microsoft deal, we’ve been getting some questions whether our upcoming and recently launched games will be available via Game Pass. While we do not have plans to put Modern Warfare® III or Diablo IV into Game Pass this year, once the deal closes, we expect to start working with Xbox to bring our titles to more players around the world. And we anticipate that we would begin adding games into Game Pass sometime in the course of next year.”
If the deal does close next week or anytime up through the October 18th deadline, then it will happen very close to the end of the year. While the deal could be finalized by UK regulators soon, there may be other details that need to be handled if and when the deal goes through. Even with that, Diablo IV is still a big game with a Steam launch happening soon and a new season to carry its momentum. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is still not released yet, so both of those not making their way to Game Pass straight away makes sense.
Yet, it does look like Activision Blizzard and Microsoft are setting the stage for which titles will be among the first sets to make their way over to Game Pass in 2024.

has been a big success for Bethesda and Microsoft. Not only was it thebest-selling game in the US for September, but it’s also been a significant boon for Game Pass. According to Microsoft, the day of Starfield’s launch set a record for the highest number of new Game Pass subscribers.
Manor Lords, which has long been the most-wishlisted city builder on Steam as well as one of the most-wanted games overall, just behind Hades 2 and Hollow Knight Silksong, is coming to PC in early access on April 26, 2024, with a console release date "to be revealed at a later time."
Bethesda Softworks’ space-faring RPG Starfield continues to set new milestones with its player numbers. In the conference call for Microsoft’s Q1 fiscal year 2024 earnings, CEO Satya Nadella revealed that over 11 million have played the game till now. He also noted that “nearly half of the hours played” have been on PC.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella now has one less milestone to worry about when it comes to his performance-based pay, as the company has dropped growth targets from the metrics used to determine his compensation. Although a LinkedIn post from September indicated that Game Pass may have over 30 million subscribers, this seemingly still falls short of the number of players the gaming giant had hoped to attract to its subscription service.
Microsoft has announced its next showcase event, the Xbox Partner Preview, for October 25th. It will broadcast on Twitch and YouTube at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET and feature over 20 minutes of trailers and gameplay from third-party developers. There will also be announcements for upcoming Game Pass titles.
Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard games won't appear on Xbox Game Pass until next year. On the Official Xbox Podcast, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer claimed that players wouldn't be seeing a big drop of those titles immediately, due to the lengthy regulatory challenges the company faced in its buyout attempt. Since it was uncertain whether the acquisition would be approved by Britain's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) until recently, Xbox wasn't able to do the groundwork for adding the catalogue to their gaming subscription service. Ahead of the deal's closure, Activision Blizzard confirmed on Twitter that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and newly-launched Diablo IV won't be coming to Game Pass soon, but Spencer's statement covers older titles as well.
Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard surely hit its fair share of roadblocks in the approval process, but at long last, the deal was formally closed last week, with Microsoft officially welcoming Activision Blizzard King to Xbox. A deal of this magnitude is obviously going to have a significant impact on the industry for years to come, but where the immediate future is concerned, many will be hoping to see games in the Activision Blizzard back catalog being added to the Game Pass catalog.
Microsoft has announced new titles coming to Xbox Game Pass in late October, which includes Cities: Skylines II, the Dead Space remake, Jusant, Mineko’s Night Market, and more.

After nearly two years since the announcement, Microsoft has officially acquired Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion. Now, in emails from Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox Head Phil Spencer and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, we know Kotick will remain CEO through the end of 2023. Kotick says Spencer specifically asked him to remain as CEO through the end of the year to help with the transition, now that Activision Blizzard is part of the Xbox first-party umbrella.
After one year, eight months, and 26 days, Xbox has finally completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, meaning it now owns premium video game franchises including Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo.
