Fortnite developer Epic Games is set to lay off 870 employees as it seeks to lower costs, a Bloomberg report reveals. In a memo sent to workers earlier today, chief executive officer Tim Sweeney said the company had been spending a lot more money than it was earning for quite some time. He said: «I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see this was unrealistic.»

Hideki Kamiya has confirmed he will be leaving Japanese studio PlatinumGames on 12th October 2023. The director of classics like Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Okami, Kamiya shared the news on Twitter and explained the decision was «based on my own beliefs and was by no means an easy decision to make». It sounds like Kamiya could stay in the gaming industry following his departure, though, as he says he'll «continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way».

NIS America has announced it's remastering the Nintendo 3DS RPG The Legend of Legacy for PS5 and PS4, with a view to release the enhanced version early next year. Side-scrolling platformer The Last Case of Benedict Fox will be ported to PS5 as a Definitive Edition, it's been confirmed. First released for Xbox Series X|S and PC in April, this updated version sports combat and platforming improvements, better visuals and an updated UI, enhanced enemy AI, and further gameplay features. New fiscal results belonging to indie publisher Devolver Digital have revealed the company is beginning to reject deals from Sony and Microsoft to put titles on Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus. Building on reports of subscription fatigue where consumer spending is concerned, Devolver Digital claims it has turned down multiple proposals from platform holders as the offers «undervalued the titles' value and revenue opportunities in 2023 and 2024».

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has come away with the most viewed trailer of Sony's latest State of Play livestream, completely dwarfing the numbers Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has managed to record. At the time of writing, the PS5 game has got 2.5 million views on its new Expanded Marvel's New York trailer, which is considerably more than any other trailer included in the presentation combined on the PlayStation YouTube channel.

Square Enix has announced that those who played PS5, PS4 game Final Fantasy VII Remake will be treated to «special bonuses» when they boot up Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Tracked through your save data, this is being done because the publisher isn't carrying over levels or abilities. As such, the bonus items are just a «little something extra».

Almost half of the entire workforce at Ascendant Studios has been laid off as a result of poor sales for its magical FPS Immortals of Aveum. Speaking to Polygon, three employees at the developer said «nearly half of its staff» was let go on Thursday, with bad sales of the game cited as one reason why. Sources claimed around 40 people were laid off from a studio that had 80 to 100 employees.

The launch of upcoming free-to-play shooter XDefiant has been delayed after Ubisoft shared the title has failed to pass certification on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms. The game was expected to be releasing at the end of last month, but following this setback, a new release date depends on whether platform holders Sony and Microsoft give it a pass in the next two weeks. If they do, launch can be set for the end of September. If a day one update is required to fix any lingering issues, XDefiant will be out in early October.
