10 Best PlayStation Games Of 2023

Sony's PlayStation 5 console was initially released in November 2020, and has accrued an impressive catalog of games since. The two launch models – one with a built-in disc drive, and one without – have given way to a new iteration of the PS5, with a slightly smaller form factor and a detachable disc drive. The ninth console generation has ushered in the use of solid-state drives, rather than the hard disk drives that came before, nixing lengthy load times for even the most demanding games. Many of the PS5's best games put the SSD to good use, while simultaneously providing unprecedented tactile feedback via the DualSense controller.

Platform games have had a standout year. 2023 has been one of the best years for the genre since perhaps 2018 and its catalog of La Mulana 2, among others. As usual, Nintendo’s seal of quality shines through with their representation, but there’s a fair bit to jump and collect regardless of your console (or PC) preference. Metroidvanias took a backseat this year to traditional platformers. While sidescrollers still reign supreme in the genre, Ghostrunner 2 was a pleasant surprise that took that parkour action I loved from the original Mirror’s Edge and cranked it up to a whole new level.

Going into 2023, it seemed like the year was poised to be a landmark one for the horror genre, and it mostly delivered the goods. Some games expected for 2023, like the Silent Hill revival, didn’t materialize, but we still got rock-solid remakes of games like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 and some terrifying new nightmares like Alan Wake 2. Pure adventure games are a peculiar genre. Some of the most popular games nowadays belong to the action/adventure genre, but for the purposes of our year-end lists, we prefer to split this category into action and adventure.

Manhwa initially originated in South Korea but shares stark similarities with manga. However, that doesn’t imply that Manhwa doesn’t have its charm. With engaging narrative and immersive characters, it captivates audiences with its stellar visuals and constantly growing fanbase.

2023 was a huge year for PlayStation 5, with Sony finally able to cut loose and produce consoles without any of the constraints of the last few years. There’s now over 50 million PS5 consoles out in the wild, as they’ve taken a firm grasp of this generation, and then there’s the launch of the PlayStation VR 2 to hopefully rekindle their ambitions for virtual reality.

With AAA titles becoming safer and safer, it is indie games that bring the innovation the video game industry as a whole needs. Much like the past few years, 2023 has seen the release of some excellent titles that twist defined genres into something unique, blending their excellent mechanics with visuals that may not be cutting-edge but are still pleasant enough to the eye.

The PC Master Race has been a meme for a good 15 years now, but it’s truer than ever in 2023. A top tier gaming PC might be horrendously expensive when stacked up against a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but these days it gives you the best of all worlds. Almost.

One of 2023’s biggest cinema trends was the way accomplished filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and many more delivered some of the most creatively and commercially successful work of their careers. There was just something in the air this year, as one major artist after another took big swings that connected.

Multiplayer gaming feels pretty much inescapable these days. Sure, we’ve left the days of “tacked on” multiplayer modes behind us, but now we have so many games that are all about online gaming, live service models, and a constant drip feed of things to lure you back in to play.

What does it mean to be an indie developer? Well, the definition these days seems to about as broad the Action-Adventure genre. Games with all the hallmarks of an indie production can come from a small team within a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, from indie publishers that have brought developers in-house, and then we’ve seen independent developers build up and grow over the course of decades to the point that they can craft landmark, genre redefining RPGs.
