Vampire Survivors announces free ‘Chilling Update’ coming soon! New maps, weapons, and characters, explained

New World ’s latest update is set to go live overnight, bringing the return of Nightveil Hallow, and opportunities to fight Baalphazu once more. In addition to the Halloween event, the update has a whole bunch of fixes and improvements across the board.

It’s only been a couple of weeks since poncle teased a new update for their genre-defining smash-hit Vampire Survivors, with a typically humorous trailer that showcased a new map, a new weapon, and even a new playable character. Since then it’s been radio silence, until today, when a release date for the new update, titled Whiteout, was suddenly announced via the official poncle Twitter account. Basically, Vampire Survivors is releasing a substantial free update sooner than you would think. Read on for all the exciting details.

Vampire Survivors is still occupying my mind and my Steam library’s installed games years after its release. Poncle sucked me into its endless cycle of bullet-hell combat almost instantly, and I haven’t been able to escape it since. It looks like I’ll be hopping back into the game yet again soon, thanks to a major free update. With steady patches and DLC releases, the game expands regularly, leaving a variety of new content to traverse through and a slew of achievements to work towards.

We’re midway through October, with the heaviest hitters set to launch in the coming weeks. That includes Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, which launches on October 27th (after a delay to avoid competing with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2). It promises over 20 hours of gameplay, but there are also two expansions coming post-launch.

D3 Publisher will release Earth Defense Force 6 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam in spring 2024, followed by Epic Games Store shortly after, the company announced.

Dotemu has announced the arrival of a new content update for 2022’s Windjammers 2. While two new characters may seem like the most substantial addition, the fact that it’s getting a long-overdue tutorial mode is probably the most important.

Steam Next Fest, the digital event swarming with cool demos, has countless games aiming at a piece of Vampire Survivors' pie. Take a casual scroll through the available demos, and you’ll see dozens of top-down, auto-battling, roguelike, bullet heaven mash-ups. That was to be expected. But I wasn’t expecting to stumble on Cursorblade, which is already an absolute roguelike banger in my eyes and potentially outshines the subgenre's big daddy.

New World ’s latest Forged in Aeternum is all about cinematics, both the design process and collaboration in the base game and in the just-released Rise of the Angry Earth expansion. 

Battlefield 2042 never really managed to recover from the tough start it endured where its player numbers are concerned, but DICE has continued to update the game with new content, more of which will be coming soon. Season 6: Dark Creations will go live for the multiplayer shooter on October 10, and DICE and EA have released new trailers to offer new details on what it will bring.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.5, “Growing Light” is here, with new main scenario quests, Island Sanctuary updates, expanded Duty Support, PvP Season 5, and a new raid, dungeon, and trial.

Publisher New Blood Interactive and developer David Szymanski have announced DUSK HD, a “full visual remaster” of retro first-person shooter DUSK. It will launch as a free update to DUSK in December.
