UK retailer Game is reportedly cutting an unspecified number of jobs.
Speaking to Eurogamer, multiple employees said workers had been told to expect redundancies as the company moves most non-managers to zero-hours contracts.
These are casual contracts where employers aren’t required to offer work to staff and workers aren’t required to accept it if it is offered.
Those set to be impacted by layoffs were reportedly told they would be contacted separately.
VGC has contacted Frasers Group, which acquired Game for £52 million in 2019, for comment on this report.
Game’s UK retail businesses are spread over 320 standalone stores and concessions within Sports Direct and House of Fraser, according to the company.
In January, Game confirmed plans to end its long-running pre-owned video game business.
“As part of the integration of Game, we will be phasing out the trade-in, pre-owned and Game Elite offerings in the UK over the coming months,” a spokesperson for Frasers Group told the BBC.
“Pre-owned will still be available in our standalone stores across the UK while stock lasts, and Game Elite will still be available until the end of summer.”

There’s an uncomfortable sense among the gaming community, as industry layoff numbers stack up, project after project is cancelled, and as console life cycles slow, that we’re on the cusp of a bit of a video game dry spell. That feeling isn’t totally unfounded - there are very few AAA game release dates announced for the second half of this year, and the AA market isn’t exactly hopping either. All three console communities - Switch, Xbox, and Playstation - are feeling empty on the games front right now, and only the Switch has the excuse of a new box being imminent. And even that’s still technically just a rumor!
