The Dark Riders play a major role in Season of Discovery Phase Two. Who are these mysterious horsemen, and what do they want? We go over their lore.
As part of one of the questlines to receive new runes in Season of Discovery Phase Two, players are recruited by a Dalaran Agent, who tasks us with recovering seven Dalaran Relics, which were recently stolen by Dark Riders.
According to the agent, while it should be impossible for outsiders to enter the magical city, a group of seven hooded figures on horseback somehow managed to obtain these relics from Dalaran's vaults.
Long before the events of World of Warcraft, the Dark Riders were a group of swindler merchants, who made the mistake of attempting to sell fake magical artifacts to Medivh. He responded by cursing them with an eternal existence, bound to his service, to forever pay for their crimes by collecting genuine magical artifacts for Karazhan. Though Medivh is long-since gone, the Dark Riders have continued to haunt the kingdom of Stormwind, particularly Duskwood, seeking out such relics as the Scythe of Elune.
The Dalaran Agent idly wonders if the Dark Riders are serving a new master, and while there's no real reason to suspect that — the Riders have never really seemed to need a reason to collect relics beyond the curse — it's still an interesting question to ask. Could this be a hint that at least these seven riders are serving someone new? Someone already very suspicious? The relics they have stolen from Dalaran are an interesting and fun mix: Curious Dalaran Relic, Glittering Dalaran Relic, Odd Dalaran Relic, Whirring Dalaran Relic, Slippery Dalaran Relic, Heavy Dalaran Relic, and Creepy Dalaran Relic.
Of course, we retrieve all the relics and return them to the Agent, so whatever the Dark Riders were planning, they failed. Still, it's interesting that they managed to breach Dalaran at all. We wonder if those relics are still in the magical city's vaults to this day...
