One thing we’ve grasped about Super Mario Bros Wonder by now is that the team at Nintendo worked really hard not just to create a unique title but one that would stand out on its own compared to the 2D titles from Mario’s past. As the Metacritic reviews showcase, they were able to make things work and impress a ton of people. However, when it comes to “throwing things at the wall to make it stick,” you will inevitably have some ideas that don’t make the cut. As revealed during a developer interview with Nintendo, one such idea was about live commentary.
If you’re confused about that, we’re talking about the kind of thing where “outside people” would record reactions to things you’ve done, and then they would be played in real-time. You might recall that a certain Capcom fighting game had that recently, and it was a big hit. Well, as the team noted, they almost had that feature:
“We actually spent about six months seriously developing live commentary. We tried adding voices to match the player’s actions. Even though we’d added various voices, questions like, “Who’s doing this commentary?” started to pop up amongst the team. Something about it just didn’t feel right.”
It’s not hard to see how that kind of “feeling” would pop up as it’s not something you’d expect from a 2D platformer like Super Mario Bros Wonder. For a fighting game? Yeah, that makes sense, as there are commentators in all sorts of fighting sports. But the twist took a bit of a turn when they revealed that one of the voice ideas they had for the commentary…was a Tsundere voice. AKA, a woman who would be mean to you and yet was also kind of nice.
And apparently, people liked the option:
“In fact, according to our play test records, quite a few people were switching to the Tsundere commentary.”
As for why they nixed the idea, they noted that it would take plenty of work to not only record the voices but input them properly into the title. Given everything they were trying to put into the game, that’s not a bad thing to cut out, even if it didn’t give certain people their “fix” that they would’ve enjoyed.
Even still, the game is packed full of new ideas that were implemented. There are new power-ups like the elephant fruit, the drill cap, and being able to use bubbles for various things. Plus, there are the new enemies, badges, and, of course, the Wonder Flower.
The game comes out on Friday.

Boxed Super Mario Bros Wonder sales beat those of Spider-Man 2 in the UK last week, thereby overtaking the first spot on the sales chart.
There are many mysteries in the video game space that we’re not likely to get answered anytime soon. Then, there are the “curiosities” that honestly don’t make sense even WHEN someone in charge explains them. Case in point, Super Mario Bros Wonder was a landmark title for Nintendo both upon its announcement in June and its release last week. But not just because the game pushed the bounds of 2D platforming in unique ways but because there was a key change behind the scenes. Specifically, the longtime voice of Mario, Charles Martinet, was replaced. But despite that big departure, we didn’t find out who was the voice of Mario until MUCH later.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is out now, and gamers have been enjoying much of what the game offers. There was a bit of a worry early on that things might be “too wacky” or “too weird” for their tastes, but it soon became clear that the game is a fountain of creativity that many gamers are definitely going to try and replicate in one form or another. However, little “oddities” made fans wonder if they wouldn’t like them. One of them is the “talking flower” that is prevalent throughout the Flower Kingdom and reacts to various things.

The wait is nearly over. Super Mario Bros Wonder is almost here, and fans can’t wait to play it for various reasons. Easily, one of the biggest reasons is that the game is one of the highest-rated titles of 2023, and people want to see how great it is compared to what the critics say. But another reason gamers are excited about it is that players can use numerous new power-ups and abilities and want to try them out in spades. Not surprisingly, one of the ones that players love the most is the ability to turn into an elephant.
Anyone wanting to own a tiny Elephant Mario will be in luck in 2024, as Super Mario Bros. Wonder plushies are on the way. This release window is currently only set for Japan, but international fans will almost certainly be able to purchase their own Proboscidea-style Mario in the future.
Mario is a bit like a video game Jessica Fletcher. Just as murders always conveniently seem to happen around that fictional author, trouble follows Mario wherever he goes, and it’s pretty much always Bowser or Bowser Jr. shaped. That’s exactly what happens in Super Mario Bros. Wonder as Mario and all his Mushroom Kingdom pals decide to wander on over to the nearby Flower Kingdom and pay Prince Florian and the locals a visit. Big ol’ Bowser turns up, zooms in on his Koopa Clown Car, touches the Wonder Seed that everyone’s marvelling at, and promptly turns into an evil castle. Yes, really.
It turns out that Super Mario Bros. Wonder had a “live commentary” feature during its development that would have matched players’ actions as they progressed through the 2D platformer’s levels, with the option to switch the generic default voice to “tsundere commentary”. However, it didn't make the final cut.
