Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Continues to Be a Touchy Subject for Embracer

Star Wars: The Old Republic's next major update, Chains in the Dark, is slated to launch on December 5th, EA and Broadsword announced today.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser left the studio in 2020 and founded a new operation in 2021 called Absurd Ventures. It turns out that he's brought some heavyweight former Rockstars with him to the new gig: As noted by French site Begeek (via Stephen Totilo), Rockstar's former vice-president of writing Michael Unsworth joined in October as Absurd Ventures' head of story and creative management, and former writer and producer Lazlow Jones is onboard as executive producer.

Back in 2021, a PlayStation showcase announced that Aspyr was developing the often-rumored remake of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. Sadly, that was pretty much the last positive piece of news we got out of that project — up until now.

It's been yet another rollercoaster week for Embracer's beleaguered remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was «delayed indefinitely» last year after Texan studio Aspyr Media was relieved of development duties.  On Friday, reports emerged that Embracer's boss had refused comment on the fate of the game, stating with exquisite irony «I notice that anything I say to this becomes a headline.»

Last week, rumors began floating around that the remake was effectively dead and no longer being developed. A new report suggests that isn’t true.

Amid continued silence from embattled games company Embracer about the status of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, developer Saber Interactive is reportedly still soldiering on with the project in some capacity.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old – Republic has been caught in a vortex of behind-the-scenes drama ever since its announcement, with the project having been taken off developer Aspyr Media and handed over to Saber Interactive last year, along with being hit with an indefinite delay. Recently, journalist Jeff Grubb claimed, however, that development on the remake had stopped altogether, even at Saber, throwing into question whether the title will ever see the light of day.

Back in 2021, it was announced that Knights of the Old Republic would be getting an official remake, with plans to release it on PC and PS5. However, things have not been going swimmingly for KOTOR‘s return, and if you’ve clicked on this headline, you already know where this is going.
