Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman has revealed that he is ready to greenlight one of the follow-up series to Star Trek: Picard if he had the authority to do that.
In Star Trek: Picard viewers got to see Jean Luc Picard’s (Patrick Stewart) life after he decided to leave Starfleet. Those sequences made fans believe that the Star Wars universe can be explored beyond Starfleet, entering several other areas. Since the conclusion of Picard Season 3, viewers have been asking the makers to work on another Picard spin-off titled Star Trek: Legacy in which members from the other Star Trek shows can also appear. In a recent interview, producer Kurtzman shared a disappointing update about the series, mentioning that he lacks the authority to approve a new project.
Speaking in an interview with Den of Geek, Kurtzman expressed his desire to move ahead with Star Wars: Legacy. During the conversation, he also made it clear why no one is talking about the development of the above-mentioned series. Kurtzman said, “If I had a magic button, a magic ‘greenlight button,’ for Star Trek: Legacy, and it was all on me, I’d push that button today… Right now, it’s beyond my paygrade.” His statement should make Star Trek fans happy because it makes it clear that he is ready to work on the spin-off. Sadly, Kurtzman is not the only person who needs to be on board for the series.
Season three of Star Trek: Picard confirmed the strong desire for a sequel from fans. Social media was flooded with support for the series, with a hashtag and petition gaining widespread attention. Apart from them, fans also started a campaign called Letters 4 Legacy that solely focused onStar Trek: Legacy getting greenlit. This isn't the first time such a campaign has happened in Star Trek's history. When the original series faced cancellation after its second season, fans wrote letters to NBC urging them to reconsider, and their efforts paid off. It would be interesting to see if this campaign would be able to encourage the makers to give fans what they need. Picard has been extremely successful on Paramount Plus and garnered universal acclaim. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that viewers want to see Picard’s story moving forward in one way or the other.
It would be better if the makers decided to work on the series soon because of Stewart’s age. Although he is still a force to be reckoned with, Stewart might not be able to shoot much if Legacy takes too much time. His exclusion from the series would be a travesty. Although there are plenty of Star Trek projects in development, both actors and fans are currently eager for more. Delaying Legacy too much could seriously impact the show's success.
