Apple is finally paying attention to the standard iPhone lineup, and the trend is expected to continue this year. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus came out with the Dynamic Island on the front and a slightly tweaked design from the back. The changes allowed the handsets to compete better against its 'Pro siblings. However, the device's internals were different as the iPhone 15 features 6GB of RAM in contrast to the iPhone 15 Pro's 8GB of RAM. This will change as the company wants to streamline the iPhone 16 lineup with 8GB of RAM and WiFi 6E support.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature an upgraded 8GB of RAM, a significant jump over the iPhone 15's 6GB of RAM, according to Jeff Pu from Haitong International Securities (via MacRumors). The analyst also claims that the standard iPhone 16 models will also feature support for WiFi 6E. Apple has kept the standard and 'Pro' iPhone models different in performance for the past few years. We can speculate that until the company plans another RAM upgrade for future 'Pro' iPhones, both models will share the same RAM capacity.
Apple's entire iOS experience revolves around optimizations, allowing the RAM to take better advantage of the software's registry items. On the flip side, iPhones never require large amounts of RAM to operate at full capacity. For instance, we have seen performance comparison videos of the iPhone 15 Pro with 8GB of RAM against flagship Android smartphones with 16GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 Pro can roughly beat any Android smartphone in performance. Nonetheless, more RAM is always better for future updates.
Other than 8GB of RAM, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are also reported to feature upgraded WiFi connectivity. Pu claims the forthcoming iPhone models will support WiFi 6E, allowing faster download and upload speeds as the standard works with a 6 GHz band. However, you must invest in a WiFi 6E router, the only way to enjoy faster speeds.
Apple will announce the iPhone 16 lineup with front-facing features and changes later this year. Take note, that the company's plans could always change before the device enters the mass production stage, so take the news with a grain of salt. The iPhone 16 is also expected to have a redesigned back camera layout. The company is currently testing an iPhone 12-like system where the cameras will rest vertically.
