Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the PlayStation 5 has surpassed 40 million units sold.
Sony launched the PS5 in November 2020, after revealing the console the year prior, and since then, more than 40 million consoles have been purchased by players. In February, the console maker announced it had shipped 32 million units in the PS5’s lifetime, which means in just five months, Sony has sold at least 8 million more consoles.
That’s a significant jump, especially given that it’s been somewhat of a quieter year for Sony so far. There’s no doubt the release of God of War Ragnarok last winter pushed PS5 sales, helping it reach that 32 million mark, but since then, the only first-party PlayStation release for PS5 has been Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores DLC and MLB The Show 23. Horizon Call of the Mountain is also a first-party game released this year but it's exclusive to PSVR2.
However, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XVI last month exclusively on PS5, so while not a first-party game, it likely further pushed console sales. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is getting its own special limited edition PS5 console bundle, will likely lead to more hardware sales as well.
SEI President and CEO Jim Ryan discusses this milestone marker for the PS5 in a new statement released today. Below is a portion of it:

2023 hasn’t been nearly as stacked as last year was when it comes to first party PlayStation releases, and though there are currently a few games to look forward to on that front in the coming months, it looks like the schedule is going to be even lighter than originally intended.
Take-Two Interactive, the publishing company which owns both Rockstar Games and 2K, released its first-quarter financial results on August 8. There are some pretty impressive numbers in there.
The Granblue Fantasy series made the decision to branch out into uncharted territories with the launch of fighting title Granblue Fantasy: Versus in the early months of 2020, and it’s a decision that seems to have paid off for Cygames.
After announcing 40 million unit sales for the PlayStation 5 late last month, Sony has provided updated shipment numbers. In its Q1 fiscal year 2023 financial results, the company confirmed 41.7 million total units shipped as of June 30th, 2023. In the three month period ending on the same date, it shipped 3.3 million console units, which is 900,000 units more than the same quarter from last year.
The Metal Gear franchise has been dormant for a while now. It’s last major release was Metal Gear Survive in 2018, and if you want to completely ignore its existence (which, why wouldn’t you), you’d have to go back to 2015 for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. And yet, despite being treated like a forgotten step-child by Konami, the series is managing to attract its fair share of new sales.
The Resident Evil franchise has exhibited incredibly long legs where its sales are concerned, and unsurprisingly, that continues to be the case. Capcom has updated its list of Platinum Titles, providing updated sales numbers for its Resident Evil games, and there have been some interesting developments.
Capcom has updated its list of Platinum Titles, providing updated sales figures for Monster Hunter titles (among others) as of June 30, 2023. Unsurprisingly, the action RPG continues to be a steady seller for the Japanese company.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 18.51 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2023. The updated sales figures for the open world title were announced by Nintendo during its recent quarterly earnings briefing. Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units within three days of release, and clearly, has continued to sell at an impressive rate in the weeks since then.
Sony has kicked off a big PlayStation summer sale, with £75 off the list price on a new PlayStation 5 console, a saving that UK retailers are pushing that little bit further to take £80 off the price.
Sony is temporarily lowering the price of the PlayStation 5 in the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, and India, a discount that appears to signal a similar temporary price drop in the U.S.
The PS5 launched in 2020 with a slew of promises, including faster loading times and a slew of eye-catching games. The system delivers many of those features, though feats such as 8K gaming remain a dream. Nevertheless, the public has clearly warmed to the PS5, and it is already celebrating 40 million units sold globally.
