Sony investigating Insomniac hack which reportedly leaked Wolverine files and employees' personal data

Material from last year's Rockstar hack has seemingly been shared online, claiming that the company cancelled multiple games and DLC expansions. Most concerningly, however, it's being claimed that the leak includes information on Rockstar employees, including contact details.

Rockstar Games has seemingly been hit with yet another leak. Several reports have tipped that the complete source code of Grand Theft Auto 5 has been leaked. Reports have also suggested the leak includes GTA 6 codes and files from a rumoured sequel to the company's 2006 game, Bully. Notably, the hacker who helped leak GTA 6 gameplays last year was sentenced to indefinite hospital prison last week. Even the GTA 6 trailer was revealed 15 hours ahead of schedule in response to a leak that had shared the trailer online.

Earlier this week, 1.6 terabytes of data was stolen from Insomniac and leaked online by a ransomware group, uncovering its slate of upcoming games, personal employee information, and gameplay footage of Wolverine as well as a PC build. Now, that build has been cracked and made playable without crashing, shared en masse online.

On Dec. 12, notorious ransomware group Rhysida announced it was holding a mass of Insomniac Games data hostage. If Insomniac Games wanted to keep the information from being released, it would have to pay up. Rhysida wanted 50 bitcoin (roughly $2 million) for the data — and it was willing to take that from anyone who wanted it, via an auction on its dark-web site. When the imposed seven-day deadline passed without a buyer, Rhysida posted most of the hacked data online — a massive 1.67 TB that contains more than 1.3 million files, according to cybersecurity website CyberDaily.

Details of Insomniac’s future games have been released onlin amidst a major data breach at the company, revealing further games based around Marvel characters, timing of the next Ratchet & Clank game, and when the studio will next look to build out a new IP.

Wolverine PS5 gameplay footage and internal data of countless Insomniac Games employees have leaked online. The ransomware group Rhysida has followed through on its threat to release 1.67TB of confidential data, after publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) refused to meet their demands of paying 50BTC or $2 million within a week. The group also claims to have leaked 98 percent of the data, while the remaining two percent was sold to undisclosed sellers — it's unclear what those files contain. Videos have begun circulating online, featuring raw gameplay accompanied by animated storyboards, concept art, locations, the general plot, and a targeted release window of 2026.

Last week, ransomware group Rhysida revealed it had hacked Marvel's Spider-Man 2 developer, Insomniac Games. It posted images to prove the validity of its claim, demanding 50 bitcoin – roughly $2 million – from Sony within seven days or it would leak what it had discovered, as reported by CyberDaily. Sony did not comply with the demand and now the group has released more than a terabyte of hacked data pertaining to Insomniac Games.
