Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup has been praised for having the best build qualities for any portable notebook. That unibody chassis gives structural integrity like no other, but the internal issues and the arrangement of the components are an entirely different story. Every portable Mac features flexible display ribbon cables that are extremely fragile and have to be handled with extreme care, and when these cables are pressed against accumulated dust and dirt, they can get damaged, leaving the owner with an unusable machine. These incidents are being referred to as ‘dust door.’
The dust and dirt likely enter through the same vents where the hot air is exhausted. When certain MacBook Pro models are opened and closer at a certain angle, they leave themselves susceptible to irreparable damage, as dust and dirt can enter these gaps, make constant contact with the flexible display ribbon cables, and damage them to the point where the screen cannot be used anymore. There is also the possibility that dust and dirt can enter through the small keyboard openings, with the same disastrous result.
Thankfully, according to MyDrivers, this issue does not affect the newer MacBook Pro models but the older ones that were released from 2016 to 2020. Ricky Panesar, the founder of repair specialist iCorrect, said the issue affected the A1989, A2251, A2289, A2338, and A2141 models, with the latter being the most susceptible to damage. It is unclear if users affected by the problem were offered complimentary service from Apple or if they had to pay a massive sum to replace the entire display assembly and the cables.
However, it should be noted that dust and dirt can also accumulate due to a lack of service. MacBook Pro owners often leave their machines untouched from the inside, resulting in pet hair and other particles clogging the air vents, fans, and heatsinks. This accumulation will eventually lead to the damaging of the flexible display ribbon cables. Apple’s customer service representatives can easily pin the blame on the customer for neglecting their MacBook Pro, leaving them with nothing but a damaged display that they have to fund from their own pocket.
