Video game subscription services are fantastic for those of us who are fed up with spending $70 on new games, not to mention the opportunity they provide to catch up on your backlog without having to buy even more games. The downside is relying on a service to have the games you want to play, and even worse, as PlayStation Plus has demonstrated this week, games leaving the service with little warning. PlayStation quietly confirmed 25 games will be leaving its PS Plus library next month, and a significant chunk of them are big Final Fantasy titles.
PlayStation quietly updated PS Plus's Last Chance To Play page (thanks, Push Square), and leading the charge of games leaving its Extra and Premium tiers on May 21 is Final Fantasy 7. That's just the original version of the game, not Final Fantasy 7 Remake which will still be available through PS Plus for the foreseeable future. PlayStation appears to be having something of a Final Fantasy clearout as six other games from the series, including 8, 9, and both parts of 10, will also be leaving on the same day.
Almost certainly not an indicator that Square Enix and PlayStation's Final Fantasy agreement has fallen on hard times, and more a sign that the timeframe the two parties gave for the games to be on PS Plus is about to expire. Since they were likely all added at the same time, that means they're all leaving at the same time. For the optimists among you, it could also be a sign that the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake is real and some concrete news will be coming soon.
While the Final Fantasy games leaving the service are the ones stealing all the headlines, they're far from the only titles departing PS Plus next month. Also joining them are The Artful Escape, My Friend Pedro, Jotun, and Monster Jam Steel Titans 2. The full list of games leaving the service can be found below. Note that even if you have these games downloaded, unless you paid for them, they will become unplayable once they leave PS Plus. If you want to keep playing after May 21, you'll need to buy them.
The leaving PS Plus page was likely updated at the same time as PlayStation added a handful of new games to its Extra and Premium tiers. Although 25 games leaving on May 21 will be a bitter pill to swallow, especially for anyone working their way through the Final Fantasy series, yesterday was one of the biggest days for the service so far. Dave The Diver was added to its library the same day it was released on PS5, and 13 other games joined it. There's also still Tales Of Kenzera: Zau to come on April 23.

The Tribeca Festival returns this June, and it will once again feature official games selections and even a game-focused panel. This year, the selections are all promising indie games, including a successor to 2021’s excellent Before Your Eyes. The show will also feature a talk on the making of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The next project from the Final Fantasy XVI developer, Square Enix's CBU 3, will likely be more lighthearted, as Yoshi-P seems to be done with dark fantasy for the time being.

Last week, Square Enix unveiled the official PC benchmark and accompanying trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Dawntrail. The trailer gave fans glimpses of new in-game areas, enemies, and combat upgrades. While that all went over rather well, the game's decade-old character creation engine is drawing ire this time and the eyes of character models, in particular.
Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide story expansion is out now, and unlike the game’s first DLC, Echoes of the Fallen, this one adds the all-new region of Mysidia to explore. While Xbox Game Pass is set to gain a selection of fantastic Day-One releases in the back half of April, subscribers may want to act fast to play the six games leaving the service in the coming weeks. To offset the amount of titles the platform offers, Microsoft always removes a handful of games whenever it brings in a new selection for players to experience. While that might sound like a bad deal, it makes sense given the already massive catalog on offer and users can still pick up the departing games for a discount before they eventually leave.
Sony has updated the Last Chance to Play section of its PlayStation Plus service, revealing several PS5 and PS4 titles leaving the subscription service, including many titles. This is not unheard of with subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, but this clear-out does seem to be larger than most, with 25 titles being removed.
There are 25 games leaving the PlayStation Plus subscription service next month, including some of the best Final Fantasy games.
