Although developer Rockstar Games isn't generally prone to imposing arbitrary limitations, with the series representing a gold standard for chaotic and amoral player freedom, does have slightly higher storytelling ideals than the no-holds-barred satire of A well-chosen sacrifice can be worthwhile, and it's easy to see the logic behind one restrictive decision in 's development.
Like the other titles,focuses on bringing a reasonably authentic take on the old American West to life. The game engages in some traditions of larger-than-life myth-making, as generally expected of the genre, but it also takes care to render some historical issues with relative accuracy and delve into the grittier and less glamorous aspects of the setting. While embracing Low Honor in can contribute to the experience in general, there are some areas where player freedom could become inflammatory in a way that's more disrespectful than beneficial.
Although makes a decent chunk of its buildings more than just facades, one particular type of structure that remains consistently off-limits is the church. If Arthur Morgan should ever want to seek out repentance for his sins on his own time, he might just be out of luck. The best way to explore a religious establishment in the game is to seek out the Abandoned Church or the Tiny Church, Points of Interest in the Bolger Glade and Lakay that mark notable exceptions to the norm.
The Lemoyne territory where both of these churches can be found comes close to connecting with the map, stretching out of the West into the American Southeast.
Realizing that churches are off-limits can be disappointing in, but it's not hard to see why Rockstar would make this call. Allowing players to commit massacres in churches would doubtless lead to controversy, and it isn't necessarily the kind that the company would be interested in using for marketing. The infamy of allowing players to kill innocent people can be effective marketing, as proven by or 's «No Russian» mission, but it's juvenile in a way that wouldn't befit what is trying to achieve.
The Abandoned Church does actually allow for some in-church action, as some Lemoyne Raiders that prove hostile to Arthur can be found squatting in the location. There's definitely a big difference between massacring churchgoers and fighting antagonists occupying ruins, however, so it's obvious why this particular encounter would be deemed more acceptable. The area can also be looted for a few lockboxes and collectibles, so it's worth checking out for any completionists or players looking for a bit
