The Nintendo Switch Online service has added three games for subscribers to play, with two of these games previously being Japan-only releases. The three games added to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service are Super R-Type, Amazing Hebereke, and Wrecking Crew '98. These three retro titles are underrated games that were released on the SNES.
The base version of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service gives players access to a variety of NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color games. The Expansion Pass Tier expands the library to include Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Advance games. Nintendo has been updating the catalog of games monthly ever since the service first launched in 2018. The last SNES games added to the service, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Killer Instinct, were in late February. The April 2024 update adds three new games that knowledgeable Nintendo fans may recognize.
In a new trailer posted by Nintendo, it is revealed these three new games will be added to the service on April 12. One of these is Amazing Hebereke, a game developed by Sunsoft released in 1994. Players battle it out in four-player matches on stages with items and traps to take advantage of or avoid. This game is playable in both single-player and four player versus multiplayer. Amazing Hebereke's addition to the Nintendo Switch Online service makes it one of the games released in the West for the first time.
The second game shown in the trailer is Super R-Type, a side-scrolling space shooter released in 1991 that was developed and published by Irem. Like other arcade space shooters of the era, players control a spaceship and gather power-up items to fight through seven challenging stages and bosses. Super R-Type also has a number of difficulty options to adjust the experience, with Novice being the easiest and Pro being the most difficult.
The last game is Wrecking Crew '98, a Japan-only action puzzle game that was released late in the SNES' life cycle, two years after the release of the Nintendo 64 console. A sequel to the NES original, Wrecking Crew '98 has players completing a series of hammer-based demolition puzzles against various opponents. Players can not only control Mario, but also a number of new and old foes, including Foreman Spike, who recently made an appearance in the Super Mario Bros. Movie as a supporting character.
Like Amazing Hebereke, this is the first time that Wrecking Crew '98 has been released in the West, as its previous release on the Wii's Virtual console was Japan-only. Fans interested in this part of the Mario franchise's history will likely be interested in this addition to the service.
