Baldur's Gate 3's lead writer, Adam Smith, has described what it was like carrying on the legacy of BioWare's previous Baldur's Gate titles.
In a recent interview with our sister site, PC Gamer, and while talking about the character Jaheira, Smith praised Bioware's work with the original games and went on to talk about the pressure of taking on the Baldur's Gate mantle and series.
Making Baldur's Gate 3, was akin to being on the «shoulders of giants», said Smith, as Larian Studios took over the established series from Bioware. He went on to say that working on Baldur's Gate 3 with that legacy in mind felt like «such a big shadow». It's a revealing window into the concept of taking over an existing and high-profile game series, and Smith's description and discussion of the work behind the game clearly show the emotions involved. You can see the full interview below as part of one of PC Gamer's 'Chat Log' video series.
Gaining the approval of those who had worked on the first two games more than twenty years ago was also a big deal for Smith: «It means a lot whenever I see anybody who was even vaguely associated with the original games being pleased...we hope we did them proud,» he says.
We found Baldur's Gate 3 to be a roaring success and a brilliant manifestation of Dungeons & Dragons in video game form. In his review, TRG Editor-in-Chief Jake Tucker described the game as «a fine contender for one of the best video game RPGs ever made. It’s the most ambitious RPG out there, and the painstakingly accurate rendition of Dungeons & Dragons will delight fans.»

Baldur's Gate 3's combat can be hard to get your head around, particularly if you're not well-versed in the rules of Dungeons & Dragons, and developer Larian Studios knows it.
The next patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 is around the corner and promises several fixes and performance improvements. It will also mark the beginning of Larian Studios expanding on the epilogues of its Origin Characters, with Karlach receiving a new ending. However, another fix is on the way to address Minthara, a character in Act 1 who can become a companion based on your choices.
Baldur's Gate 3's lead writer has explained the reasons why its second act cuts down on overworld exploration.
Baldur's Gate 3's next big patch is releasing soon, and by all accounts it will be a chonky one, featuring a host of performance improvements and other fixes. Even better, Patch 2 will apparently address Minthara, who has been hobbled by what director Swen Vincke describes as a "very, very stupid bug."
There's a good reason some Baldur's Gate 3 players plugged in over a hundred hours into its early access. Act 1, which the early access encompassed, is absolutely massive—both the overworld and the Underdark are large enough to keep you busy for a while with its chaotic, explorative adventures.
Dragon Age writer and Baldur's Gate 2 dev David Gaider has finally finished Baldur's Gate 3, and like countless other fans, he reckons it's "a worthy successor" to BioWare's CRPGs.
In the shadow of Starfield, it seems like the Baldur's Gate 3 hype train might finally be beginning to slow, but its own legacy is just beginning. Larian Studios' success seems to have surprised even the developers themselves, with the studio's lead writer paying tribute to the giants upon whose shoulders they stood to get here.
BioWare recently announced that it will be letting go of around 50 employees in a fresh round of layoffs, as it looks to become a more “agile” studio, and as it turns out, the list of people who’ll be departing the company as a result includes quite a few notable ones.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a hit with fans and critics alike, boasting an incredibly high Metacritic score of 96, making it one of 2023's highest-rated games, and one of the highest-scoring PC games of all time. But as great as it is, people still have hot takes, and thousands of fans have flocked to Reddit to share their own.
Baldur's Gate 3 has a pretty cool selection of companions for you to choose from, each with their own unique charms and quirks that makes travelling around with them and watching them interact with each other an absolute joy. However, a certain blunt Githyanki has caused somewhat of a stir on social media this past week, as some believe Lae'zal's status as the game's least popular companion is because female characters are held to a much higher standard than male ones.
BioWare writer Lukas Kristjanson, who has worked at the studio for more than 25 years, has been laid off. This comes as 50 developers lose their jobs at BioWare, despite having at least two huge games in development: Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 5.
