Nestled within a seemingly ho-hum patch for Horizon Forbidden West’s PC edition is a change I’ve been crossing fingers and ritualistically sacrificing metal dinosaurs for since release. At last I can behold those glorious words: "Resolved performance regression when enabling Nvidia Reflex On+Boost." Finally!
Thus ends a truly baffling, and annoying, performance mishap that some players of the excellent open-world sequel may not even have known was afflicting it. In short, Nvidia Reflex – usually a helpful source of input lag reduction – was, with its On+Boost setting enabled, confusing GPUs into using less of their power than they possibly could. My previous performance testing found that simply switching Reflex to On, sans boost, could raise framerates by nearly 20%.
See? Annoying, and honestly quite strange. Reflex does interface with graphics cards, along with mice and monitors, but it doesn’t normally affect GPU utilisation and framerate performance either way. And now, it doesn’t in Forbidden West either. Which is nice.
If it sounds like I’m getting uppity over nothing, I suppose that in a cosmic sense I am. But it is quite exceptionally unusual for a feature that’s very often an instant enable to end up knackering game performance to such a degree. If your hardware supports it, the done thing with Nvidia Reflex is to whack it on On+Boost immediately – and why would you not? It’s free latency reduction with (typically) zero drawbacks. To see it go so wrong is just, eww, no.
Still, I’ve had a play around with the new update and it does indeed address the issue, so Reflex’s On+Boost mode can get back to making your mouse swishes feel slightly sharper. As always intended! The patch also includes fixes for some other lingering niggles, and makes some more in-game actions – like using the Navigation Assist feature of Aloy’s Focus – rebindable on mouse and keyboard.
The Helldivers 2 debacle has reached new hellish lows as the year's best-selling game is now unavailable on Steam in over 170 countries.
Helldivers 2 has had a hell of a few days. Sony announced last week that going forward, PC players would need to link their Steam accounts with PlayStation Network in order to be able to play Arrowhead Game Studios’ mega hit, and the decision was met with instant, widespread backlash. Over the last three days, the co-op shooter has accumulated over 230,000 user reviews on Steam, with its Recent Reviews average plummeting to Overwhelmingly Negative. That has also been accompanied by many users getting refunds issued for their purchase of the game.
Helldivers 2 players have found massive tunnels on Terminid planets after the latest patch. Helldivers 2, a cooperative third-person shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, has gotten a lot of attention for its intense gameplay and ongoing updates. Set in a dystopian future, players battle against alien forces across various planets, facing formidable enemies like Bile Titans, Hive Lords, and plenty more.
PlayStation is removing Horizon Zero Dawn from its PlayStation Plus catalog later this month.
The PS Store listing for Horizon Zero Dawn has been updated to state it's leaving PS Plus Extra on 21st May 2024. As a first-party title published by Sony and internally developed at Guerrilla Games, the move comes as a surprise as it was thought all the titles Sony holds the rights to would remain on the service in perpetuity.
Well, it's been quite some time since we wrote about Ghost of Tsushima updates, but the open world action game has a new patch on PS5 and PS4. As outlined by developer Sucker Punch, update 2.19 tweaks the title for crossplay support, ahead of the PC version's release on the 16th May. PlayStation users will be able to team up with PC players in the game's co-op Legends mode.
After almost seven years at the studio, Alex Barnes, director of PSVR2 spinoff Horizon: Call of the Mountain, has been made redundant by Liverpoool-based developer Firesprite. In March, a report from Eurogamer alleged that a toxic work culture had been allowed to develop at the PlayStation first-party developer.
Sony has signaled its intention to pull Horizon: Zero Dawn from PlayStation Plus later in May, fueling rumors the company is set to announce a PlayStation 5 remaster of the game.
Helldivers 2's Stalker enemies have reportedly gained a mutation with the game's latest update, which allows them to cloak their bodies entirely and sneak up on players. Helldivers 2 released an update several days ago, making numerous balance changes that could shake up the meta. It brought nerfs to some weapons, including the JAR-5 Dominator and the RL-77 Airburst Rocket Launcher. In addition, the update buffed Automaton enemies, such as Scout Striders and Devastators, slightly increasing their fire rate and durability.
Sony seems to be putting more of an emphasis on day-one PS Plus game releases, with one of those being the upcoming Animal Well. This curious indie game has always looked like an intriguing, lo-fi platformer, and we can't wait to delve into it on 9th May as it arrives on PS5 and PS Plus Extra. The Trophy list is now available to view online (thanks, Exophase), and it looks like you'll need to trawl the Metroidvania's map for secrets if you want that Platinum gong.
Out of nowhere, Arrowhead Game Studios has released an extensive balance patch for Helldivers 2. While it reduces burning damage by 15 percent and reduces headshot damage on those with armor ratings above 100, it offers many changes to existing weapons and Stratagems.
Sony has just released the latest PS5 system software update — always a glorious day on Planet PlayStation. Coming in at just over 1GB, it's available to download and install now. The question is, as always, what does the update do?
