director James Gunn has given fans an update on the DC Universe movie’s casting and preproduction.
On Threads, Gunn was asked if he could give any Superman: Legacy updates involving the DC Studios movie’s production. The director responded positively, saying that the process is going “swimmingly” before listing the steps that are already underway.
“It’s going swimmingly,” Gunn stated. “Sets being built, costumes being finished, actors studying roles, prosthetics and VFX models being made, flights booked. Here we go.”
In a follow-up response, the filmmaker was asked how much of the cast was locked in. Through a couple of answers, it was revealed that Gunn has locked in over 90% of the cast, but not 100% as of New Years Day 2024.
The titular role in Superman: Legacy is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.
The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.

gave out some details about what sort of character Lois Lane will be in the upcoming DC Universe movie.
In many ways, James Gunn‘s upcoming rebooted DCU has the benefit of coming at a time when the MCU is in its tired teenage years, as he can take a look at what’s working and what isn’t over at Marvel and do better. Case in point? We’re getting in-canon video games, something the MCU has never delivered in 15 years.
The upcoming DC Universe media franchise helmed by James Gunn is going to include more than just movies, and the development of video games within the DCU sphere is coming at a particularly interesting time. DC already has a long history of video game adaptations, from the widely mocked to the celebrated titles. Considering the lack of any major games set in the recently concluded DC Extended Universe, there's not much precedent for the venture into DCU games, raising a lot of interesting questions about what the slate will look like.
