Is Sea of Thieves cross-platform?

Over the course of its many years of updates and expansions, Sea of Thieves has had a few notable crossovers with other pirate franchises. The Pirates of the Caribbean crossover let you team up with the legendary Jack Sparrow, but the Monkey Island content felt like it came out of nowhere. For those unaware, Monkey Island is a series of pirate point-and-click games that were as funny as the puzzles were obscure. Thankfully, you don't have to intuit that you need to combine a cat whisker with a mason jar to bypass a skeleton guard to get to this new content, but it is more challenging than you might think.

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were two of the hottest action stars on the planet. While it’s expected there would be natural competition between them, such as what existed between Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger for decades, their rivalry was far more fierce and extended beyond competing for parts and franchises. In fact, the two almost came to blows in the late ’90s.

Remember that bit in that Guy Ritchie film where Dexter Fletcher shoot a guy and then throws a glowing jar over his soldier that summons a bunch of skeletons to help him out? Me too! Must have been the direct influence for Sea Of Thieves' new Season 12, which launched earlier this week with a bang - from two smoking barrels! Among the additions in this season of the ever popular salty sea-dog open-world adventure are double barrel pistols. They deal less damage per shot but have higher rate of fire, and you can charge them up to fire both barrels at once.

Having enough Bells in to execute the most elaborate terraforming plans is the dream, but it seems Nintendo has put a cap on how much wealth players can have in-game. After years of swapping turnip prices with fellow players and hoarding Bells like dragons, one player has found that it is, in fact, possible to have too much money.

Sea of Thieves is meant to be played as part of a crew. You and a few friends loot and plunder the seas (and other players) as a team. That’s not the only way to sail the seven seas, however. If you’d prefer to sail alone, you can also take to the ocean on a smaller, more nimble ship. Taking on the pirate life without any help can be especially tough — you don’t have any backup in emergencies, and if you run up against a crew of other players, you’ll have to take them on at a disadvantage.

Last month, GTA 6 publishers Take-Two Interactive announced plans to "rationalize" their "pipeline" by laying off five per cent of their workforce - around 580 people - and cancelling various games. As part of that, they're reportedly now doing away with 70 positions at their Seattle offices - Seattle being the home of the Take-Two-owned Intercept Games, the current developers of space sim Kerbal Space Program 2.

Take-Two appears to be preparing to close its Seattle office this summer, likely as part of the recently announced layoffs across the company.

Rare’s Sea of Thieves is one of the most consistently beautiful-looking games we’ve ever played, with gorgeous, tropical vistas at every turn. In addition to being generally fun and colorful to look at, the world is littered with little secrets and Easter eggs for eagle-eyed players, and there have been dozens of them added over the years. Many of these were made by the developers in tribute to players and community members for particularly memorable deeds or contributions, while others are more personal and honor those lost too soon. Developer Rare has released the patch notes for Sea of Thieves' Season 12 update, which includes new weapons, treasure, a cannonball type, and more. The major update arrives alongside Sea of Thieves' full PS5 launch.

Rare’s live-service action-adventure title Sea of Thieves is available now for PS5 players. First available on Xbox One and PC in March 2018 before receiving an Xbox Series X/S update, it’s the first game from the developer to release on a PlayStation platform. Check out the launch trailer below.

A recently uploaded teaser for Season 12 of Sea of Thieves features some of the additional content that the upcoming major update will bring, including new weapons and items.
