Apple released its latest iOS 17 update to the public last month with a boatload of forward-facing additions and changes. Now, the company has already started working on its forthcoming iOS 18 update for next year. It appears that the company has decided to incorporate generative AI features into the platform which will be available on iOS 18 later in 2024. As for the features, the source speculates that generative AI can be offered with Siri and other features throughout the operating system.
The news was shared by industry analyst Jeff Pu from the Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities (via MacRumors. Pu states that his sources within the supply chain informed home that the Cupertino-based technology company is planning to introduce generative AI features with the launch of iOS 18 later in 2024.
Pu believes that the company will offer cloud-based features called edge AI. Additional features will take place locally on the device, potentially through the next-gen A-series chip. One of the significant additions will be implemented on Siri, allowing the virtual assistant to understand context and a series of commands via pretext. At this stage, Google is making strides as it integrates AI technology in the latest version of the Tensor G3 chip.
Apple is expected to adopt an approach similar to ChatGPT in its virtual assistant which will allow it to perform complex tasks conjoined with the Shortcuts app. According to the report, generative AI will be available on iPhone and iPad models with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 later in 2024. What this means is that the company will release new software updates and then offer the technology via software updates.
This is not the first time we have heard details on Apple's efforts in developing generative AI technology for the iPhone. While the company is far behind Google and Microsoft with Bard and ChatGPT improving as we speak. Nonetheless, Apple will initiate its efforts with the installation of a few hundred AI servers in 2023. The numbers will gradually increase and will come into play next year as Apple rolls out iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.
It was also previously speculated by Mark Gurman that Apple is working on an internal chatbot that works in a similar way to ChatGPT called "Apple GPT."
