Insomniac Games Releases Statement About Ransom Hack & Marvel’s Wolverine

The leak/hack of Insomniac Games was a terrible thing, and obviously, we don’t support what happened there. What the hacker group did was wrong, and Insomniac will be picking up the pieces of what happened for a long time. However, as is the gaming way, people looked at the documents that were put onto the internet to see what the team was up to, and one person on Reddit found a rather interesting Excel sheet that seemed to focus on a certain character with Spider-Man’s world. No, not Miles, Black Cat, or even MJ; it was about the character known as Silk.

Insomniac Games has released a statement following the massive data breach that the studio suffered and subsequent release of stolen data that occurred earlier this week.

Insomniac Games suffered one of the biggest leaks in gaming history, with over 1.3 million stolen files made public earlier this week. In a recent statement, it feels “both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it’s taken on our dev team.”

This year has not been a great year for the video game industry. While we saw some big title releases that were well-received by fans, we’ve also seen a number of restructurings resulting in layoffs and studio closures. That’s something we want to see less of in 2024, but that might still not be the case. There’s a lingering feeling for a few studios out there, one of which is Insomniac Games. Thanks to the leaks, we’re finding out that there was a push from Sony to see Insomniac Games drop over fifty jobs. These leaks don’t stop there; beyond that, we got a look into what the future held for the studio, which included a multiplayer Spider-Man game. 

Insomniac Games has publicly responded to this week’s massive data breach, which saw hacking group Rhysida drop 1.6 terabytes of data onto the internet. The studio has called the hack “extremely distressing,” but reaffirms that Marvel’s Wolverine “continues as planned” despite spoilers circulating the internet. 

Last week, reports began to emerge that Insomniac Games had been the victim of a ransomware attack that had seen details of an upcoming Wolverine game (as well as personal information of several developers) revealed to the public. 

Insomniac Games has released an update in response to the recent cyberattack that impacted the studio. 

Earlier this week, ransomware group Rhysida released more than a terabyte of data it illegally obtained by hacking Marvel's Spider-Man 2 developer, Insomniac Games. The hacked data comprised of more than 1.3 million files, for a total of 1.67 terabytes of data, including information about Marvel's Wolverine, future Insomniac Games titles, release schedules, private employee information like tax and employment forms, internal studio messages, and more.

Without a doubt, it’s been a rough couple of weeks now for Insomniac Games. After releasing their successful sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man earlier this year, the focus soon shifted towards getting their next game ready. Marvel’s Wolverine was previously teased to the public, but we haven’t seen the game in quite a long time. However, the focus on their work quickly shifted towards dealing with a public cyberattack. A ransomware group managed to hack into Insomniac Games, and with it came a slew of stolen data. 

Just when you thought the gaming year would end somewhat peacefully, a massive attack on a fan-favorite developer caused shockwaves throughout the industry. As you likely have heard, Insomniac Games was hit with a ransomware attack. But it wasn’t just a simple attack; the people behind it were demanding millions from the company and were threatening to expose all sorts of information about the company, the games it was working on, and the people within the company if they didn’t pay up. Well, they didn’t, and a leak of massive proportions was spread across the internet for all to see.

The Rhysida hacking group has stolen 1.67 terabytes of data from Sony developer Insomniac Games.

Wolverine PS5 gameplay footage and internal data of countless Insomniac Games employees have leaked online. The ransomware group Rhysida has followed through on its threat to release 1.67TB of confidential data, after publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) refused to meet their demands of paying 50BTC or $2 million within a week. The group also claims to have leaked 98 percent of the data, while the remaining two percent was sold to undisclosed sellers — it's unclear what those files contain. Videos have begun circulating online, featuring raw gameplay accompanied by animated storyboards, concept art, locations, the general plot, and a targeted release window of 2026.
