IGN Community Awards 2023

It’s no secret Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming community by storm once released. Whether it was the intense turn-based battles or the immersive storylines and dialogue , Baldur’s Gate 3 took the victory as Game of the Year during the Steam Awards 2023. 

A few hours ago, Valve closed the Steam Awards 2023 polls to announce the winners in each of the ten categories. Unsurprisingly, Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 brought home another Game of the Year award after the previous wins at the Golden Joystick and The Game Awards, beating finalists Resident Evil 4, EA Sports FC 24, Lethal Company (the runaway early access smash hit of the last couple of months), and Hogwarts Legacy.

SBS Drama Awards 2023 is all set to take place this. Recently, SBS faced a controversy regarding its declaration of the other criteria for the Best Couple Award category. The issue occurred after the network already held an online vote for the same category. My Demon’s Song Kang and Kim Yoo-Jung won in the online vote as the best couple by a huge margin.

By virtually any measure the quality of games, movies, and television shows released in 2023 has been outstanding (aside from the treatment of the industry workers who create them). That banner year is reflected in the diverse collection of 10 out of 10 scores IGN has awarded, totaling 17 for the year. It’s a mix of new and old, exciting premieres and grand finales, remakes, adaptations, sequels, and spiritual successors to some all-time greats across all mediums. Action, drama, horror, anime, sci-fi, and fantasy are all represented – and while there are no full-on comedies on the list, there are plenty of laughs to be found among them. And to have Metroid, Castlevania, Resident Evil, Zelda, and Baldur’s Gate representing our highest-scoring games of 2023 makes it feel like a year that celebrates gaming history, but with decidedly modern takes on the classics.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been crowned IGN's Best Game of 2023, narrowly beating the much-celebrated role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3. Despite missing out on the main honor, Larian's RPG still walked away with three awards, namely Best PC Game, Beyond's Best PlayStation Game and, unsurprisingly, Best RPG. It equalled the number of awards picked up by Tears of the Kingdom, which was crowned Best Open-World Game and NVC's Best Nintendo Game in addition to Best Game of the year.

The Game Awards have enjoyed consistent growth since the first showcase took place in December 2014, to the point where they have become an integral pillar for the community, especially in terms of new reveals and announcements by developers and publishers all around the world. This year’s showcase, like previous years’, was another one to exhibit continued growth for the event.

The nominees for the public-voted Steam Awards have been announced and they are, perhaps more than ever before, baffling to me. If I was being uncharitable, I'd say that's because the list is overrun by games with large multiplayer communities that can be encouraged to vote for them - but who would want to be uncharitable? Let's instead say that the list is certainly not boring, even if Starfield gets a nod for "most innovative gameplay".

The Game Awards 2023 has broken its own viewership record, clocking up around 118 million livestreams.

2023 has been a weird year. We've seen multiple MMORPG expansions come down to us, despite not really having one from one of the major hitters in the genre, while we've also seen excellent games release across the industry as a whole. It was a banner year especially for RPGs, with games like Final Fantasy XVI, Sea of Stars and, of course, Baldur's Gate 3 launching to much critical acclaim.

With The Game Awards 2023 now squarely in the rear view mirror, it's time to reflect on what was shown during Geoff Keighley's big end of year bash. Criticisms of the format and actual award presentations aside, the event did give us some significant game reveals.

All 18 categories reflect the best of PlayStation through this past year, which not only celebrate captivating new characters, sublime soundtracks, fantastic art direction, and much more, but also allow us a chance to acknowledge and thank creatives worldwide whose exceptional craft and hard work has brought us 12 months of extraordinary gaming experiences.
