Helldivers 2 – Polar Patriots Warbond Goes Live on May 9th

Sony has revealed the lineup of games joining the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog in May. This month's PS Plus offerings are led by Red Dead Redemption 2, the acclaimed action-adventure Western from Rockstar Games. Other games coming to game catalog include co-op shooter Crime Boss: Rockay City, multiplayer first-person shooter Deceive Inc., survival sim Stranded: Alien Dawn and more. The games will be available to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/Premium tier members as part of Game Catalog starting May 21.

With all the «negative sentiment» in the air and Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead keen to keep its riotous fanbase calm, the release of the premium Polar Patriots Warbond presented something of a PR issue for the Finnish studio. Not wanting to appear «tone deaf,» the dev did just about the most on-brand thing ever, putting the matter to a vote.

This author’s got to put his hands up: there are Slack chat records of me saying Helldivers 2 would be a total and utter sales flop. As it happens, the release has now cemented itself as Sony’s fastest selling first-party title of all time, netting 12 million units in 12 weeks across PS5 and PC, accurate as of 5th May. That beats God of War Ragnarok’s record of 11 million units in 10 weeks.

Sadly, my computer is incapable of producing smells beyond a faint reek of encrusted pasta sauce and regret, but if it did, I imagine I'd even now be basking in the aroma of burning bone and feather, because that is what the 10 new creatures you'll meet in the Ashlands consist of, broadly. Shout-out in particular for the monster that resembles a combusting sink clog with spider legs. Very Possum-esque.

Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has released the Polar Patriots Premium Warbond as planned after the boss of the studio polled fans on whether it should go ahead so soon after what he called “negative sentiment” over the game’s PlayStation Network account linking.

Arrowhead Games appears to be settling into a roughly monthly cadence when it comes to Helldivers 2’s Warbonds, its version of no FOMO battle passes.
