Helldivers 2 Dev Says Potential Crossovers Have To "Make Sense"

Helldivers 2 is a live service game, and that title comes with a lot of expectations. It seems like every constantly updated online game has to have a series of crossovers these days, whether it be Fortnite teaming up with Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sonic teaming up with Monster Hunter, or Final Fantasy 14 crossing over with itself. Helldivers 2 is an anomaly in the live service space though, and its opinions on crossovers are no exception.
In the Helldivers 2 Discord, Arrowhead was recently asked about the potential for crossovers with other games in the future. In response, community manager Twinbeard explained that while the team isn't against them, they'll only be considered if the crossover in question "makes sense," as the team wants to respect the Helldivers 2 "game fantasy and lore."
Crossovers have to make sense. We don't want to be Kingdom Hearts or Fortnite. If we do them, we want them to add something.
That doesn't mean Helldivers won't ever be getting a crossover with another game though, as long as it's plausible. Twinbeard says that adding melee weapons or finding items from another "game/cultural universe" could be something that Arrowhead could easily work in without compromising Helldivers lore. There are plenty of games out there with a silly yet militaristic vibe, and the fact that Arrowhead is interested in them raises the chances of getting a crossover in the future.
While there are plenty of names I could reel off, Helldivers 2 fans actually think they may have sussed out one of the game's first potential collaborations. Around a month ago, Deep Rock Galactic developer Ghost Ship Games revealed that it had written to Arrowhead regarding a potential crossover, but hadn't heard back.
More recently, the Helldivers 2 Twitter account randomly tweeted out some binary code earlier this month, which read "Where is Karl?" when translated. Deep Rock Galactic fans will know that Karl is the name of the dwarf that all playable dwarves are descended from, and Deep Rock Galactic's Twitter account responding to a recent tweet with its own string of binary code made things even more mysterious.
Other than that, there have been lots of shouts for a potential collaboration with Halo, given the similarities between the two, and I think a crossover with the Earth Defense Force series would be a natural fit. We also know that Helldivers 2 is extremely inspired by Starship Troopers, so much as to include a nod to the movie in the game's leveling system, so the sky's the limit for Arrowhead. Just don't expect Mickey Mouse or Peely to show up any time soon.
