When employees leave Google to join the artificial intelligence startup race, the search giant still has a way to benefit — by keeping those former workers as cloud customers.
More than half of venture-backed generative AI startups pay for Google's cloud computing platform, Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, said Tuesday. Of the startups valued at over $1 billion, 70% are Google Cloud customers, and about a third of those are helmed by former employees, including Anthropic, Character.ai and Cohere, the company said. That gives Google a way to extend its influence in the field even when it sheds talent.
Google's cloud unit, which reported a profit for the first time this year, has emerged as one of the company's best bets for growth as its core search business matures. Google still trails Amazon.com Inc.'s AWS and Microsoft Corp. 's Azure in the market. But startups in the field of generative AI — programs that can spin up images, text and video from simple prompts — are increasingly turning to the company, said James Lee, Google Cloud's general manager for startups and AI.
“We're seeing strong momentum in our business, and we see Google Cloud as the preferred choice for startups building generative AI,” Lee said in an interview.
Google Cloud customers have the option to use AI models from Google itself as well as other companies, a degree of flexibility that appeals to startups, Lee said.
Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said earlier this year that by his count, more than 2,000 startups have been created by former employees, some of which become customers or eventually boomerang back to Google. “I think it's a healthy part of how the ecosystem works,” he said.
Elemental Cognition CEO David Ferrucci says Google has also been in the AI space for so long, he trusts that the team will “talk a common language” when discussing his company's needs, he said. Elemental uses Google Cloud exclusively.
Google determined the proportion of startups using its platform by cross-referencing its list of cloud computing clients with research firm PitchBook's list of generative AI startups that have raised money from venture capital firms, accelerators, individual investors and other sources, a company spokesperson said. Google excluded customers that did not meet a minimum level of spending, though cloud computing credits that the company doles out to startups counted toward that threshold, the spokesperson said. Some of the startups use other cloud providers as well, Lee said.

There must be an almost erotic thrill to eliminating an entire currency at the click of a button. That's what is going to happen in Destiny 2 at the end of November when Season 23 launches. Bungie today announced that it will be completely deprecating Legendary Shards, which are a material used to pay for all sorts of items in the game. Unlike previous material deprecations, the studio also said that it will not be offering anything by way of compensation. Legendary Shards are just going to be gone.
Democratic lawmakers are pressing the top tech firms to open up about the conditions of their “ghost work” — unseen laborers like those labeling data and rating responses who have become pivotal to the artificial intelligence boom.
Your Android phone might be at risk, the Indian government has warned! In a recent development, the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has sounded the alarm on what it deems as "high" security risks lurking in the Android ecosystem. These vulnerabilities, if left unaddressed, could potentially provide malicious actors with unauthorized access to users' Android devices, putting sensitive information in jeopardy. The primary recourse offered to safeguard against this looming threat is to promptly update all applications directly through the official Play Store and check for available Android OS updates.
Google's new Playables game streaming service has now entered its testing phase, but only for a select few YouTube users.
Starfield is finally here in its non-'advance access' form and its players are already hard at work. Not hard at work exploring the galaxy or cataloguing the flora and fauna of distant alien worlds, mind you. No, they're hard at work doing the truly important stuff: making celebrities in its character creator before sending them to die in the chilly void of space. Per aspera ad astra.
Sea of Stars released last week on the back of plenty of hype and anticipation, and has been met with widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. That success is also being reflected in the game’s sales.
Baldur's Gate 3 director Swen Vincke confirms Larian Studios is already at work on a new game.
Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has suggested titles that feature generative AI will be allowed on the Epic Games Store.
No matter the company or the “field” they are in, there are always certain “constants” that they try to achieve. The biggest one is that they desire every year to be good, profitable, memorable, and a “banner year” for the company in some form. This can be especially true in the gaming space, as companies need to perform well every year to prove they can go up against their competitors and maintain their slice of their market. For 2023, there’s little doubt that Nintendo has had a year for the record books, and not just on the gaming side of things.
MaxSun recently launched the world's first and only GeForce RTX 4090 GPU with five-fans but one user who bought the card discovered that the five-fan GPU runs way hotter than the 2-fan NVIDIA Founders Edition and also some MSRP-custom models.
Going from 'here is an RPG set in Boston and Massachusetts' to 'here is an RPG set in space' is a mind boggling task. Todd Howard, captain of the SS Starfield, definitely felt the weight of his mission during development, as revealed in a letter he sent to reviewers before the game's launch.
