Final Fantasy 16 Sales Did Not Meet “the High End” of Square Enix’s Expectations

Publisher Square Enix and developers Game Studio and KAI GRAPHICS have released a gameplay overview trailer for Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai.

At Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2023, game director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) welcomed Xbox boss Phil Spencer onto the stage alongside Square Enix boss Takashi Kiryu to celebrate the announcement that Final Fantasy 14 is finally on its way to Xbox consoles after years of PlayStation console exclusivity. And it sounded like Microsoft had ensured even more Square Enix games will end up on Xbox in the coming years.

Final Fantasy 16 attracted plenty of plaudits and critical acclaim, but series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi may have endorsed it with its most important yet, describing it as the “ultimate” entry in the franchise. The ex-Square Enix director – who left the company in 2003 – posted the comments on Twitter, which will come as music to the ears of the development team.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been ten years since Square Enix dropped a meteor on the original Final Fantasy 14. The cataclysmic event that wiped the slate clean so the realm could be reborn. To mark the occasion, Square Enix has announced numerous events, all kicking off with a massive Anniversary sale. The sale runs from 17 August – 13 September 2023.

One of the most dangerous things about the internet is that plenty of posts on places like social media seem “legitimate” for one reason or another, and yet they’re later proven not to be. An excellent example is when someone posts pictures from a “store page” for a certain title that appears to have a release date or reveals a new system the game will be on. Yesterday, a rumor popped up from a Brazilian store that said Final Fantasy VII Remake was coming to Xbox. As you can probably guess, Xbox gamers were excited about this. But soon enough, the truth was revealed.

Announced back in 2021, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis has looked like a surprisingly intriguing prospect in spite of its nature as a free-to-play mobile RPG, and after having continued to look increasingly promising with its showings since then, it’s now been handed a firm release date.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will launch for iOS via App Store and Android via Google Play on September 7, Square Enix announced. Pre-registration is available now on both platforms.

GTA V reclaimed its throne in July, with Remnant 2 in hot pursuit.

Square Enix reported some steep drops in its latest financial report, leading the company’s stock to take a hit on the Japanese market. Notably, the company’s MMO segment saw a 22% drop in revenue year over year.
