One Elden Ring fan is currently playing through the game with an impressively faithful recreation of Saren Arterius, the villain from the original Mass Effect. Elden Ring has a set of chest armour called the Depraved Perfumer Robe which is embroidered with a writhing red snake that wraps around itself. It was long assumed that this was a reference to Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, the god-devouring serpent found at Volcano Manor. However, in light of Shadow of the Erdtree's first trailer, fans think the armour might have been teasing Messmer this entire time.
"The snakes on the apron are thin compared to their size and red, like Messmer's snakes, and unlike the god-devouring serpent who's blue and thick," Cheesen_One said on the game's subreddit. "The robe also depicts two separate snakes specifically and since Messmer either has two snakes or one two-headed snake, this seems to point further towards him than Rykard."
The armour's description says that the embroidery on the front (the coiled red snakes) is "a curse upon the Erdtree", and that wearers of the robe are "heresy-inclined perfumers". We know that when the Elden Ring shattered, the perfumers - who were essentially pre-modern doctors - became battle medics, "trading their aromatics for poisons and explosives". Some of these perfumers became intoxicated by their own medicine, altering their body and mind - those are the depraved perfumers.
We don't know much about Messmer the Impaler, but he looks to be a demigod, perhaps even Miquella and Malenia's brother. FromSoftware is no stranger to stories of exile, as Dark Souls likewise weaved a mystery of a son erased from the annals of history with the Nameless King. It's possible that Messmer was cast out and imprisoned in the Land of Shadow, and that all worship of him is considered heresy. That would explain the robes' description if they are in fact representative of Messmer and not Rykard as previously assumed.
We do know that a snake betrayed the Erdtree and that they were considered enemies to Godfrey even before Rykard's descent. Messmer being adorned in striking serpent imagery, even wearing a helmet fashioned to look like a snake, reveals his heretical nature. However, Cheesen_One speculates that there could be a larger serpentine figure behind both Rykard and Messmer, another FromSoft motif as we saw with Kaathe and Frampt in Dark Souls.
Whatever the case, snakes are clearly an important icon in Elden Ring and especially Shadow of the Erdtree, so fans will no doubt continue to dig into all imagery they can find in the build-up to launch. Perhaps this armour has been teasing Messmer all along, or perhaps it's another red snake herring.
