Activision has revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, sharing fresh details about the game’s single player, multiplayer, Zombies and how it ties back with Modern Warfare II. Modern Warfare 3 is coming out for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC on 10th November.
A direct sequel to last year’s game, Modern Warfare 3 sees Vladimir Makarov emerge as the big bad, with Captain Price and Task Force 141 pushed to the limit to halt his plans. In a fascinating twist, the MW3 campaign will feature both the linear, cinematic missions that COD is known for and Open Combat Missions that put more emphasis on player choice with the ability to take different approaches, like stealth or vehicular assaults, to take on objectives in larger, more open maps.
Turning to the multiplayer, and MW3 will feature all 16 launch maps from the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, remade within the modern game engine, and likely tweaked in subtle ways to suit the current COD gameplay. This is sure to be a big draw for fans of the original Modern Warfare series. Alongside these maps are four large environment maps for Ground War and Invasion game modes, as well as one large War map, which is returning from 2017’s COD WWII.
There’s all the standard game modes you can expect, as well as new modes like the 3v3v3 Cutthroat mode, and remixes that let more modes be played across maps that didn’t originally support them.
The map line up will expand through the seasons with more modernised takes of Modern Warfare’s classic maps. 12 more core 6v6 maps will be added over the coming year.
The fundamental multiplayer gameplay will now feature a ‘Tactical Stance’ that is a middle-ground between hip fire and aiming down sights, blending the mobility and accuracy of the two. In general, play responsiveness will increase with slide cancelling (and the ability to fire while sliding), partial reloads, faster mantling and more tactical sprint lengths.
Classic features will return, including map voting between matches, the classic minimap behaviour where unsuppressed weapon fire reveals positions, all perks being available at the start of the match, and the ‘Covert Sneakers Perk’ allowing for silent movement. The base multiplayer health is increased to 150, to time-to-kill will be a bit longer than in MW2.
There’s also all the previously detailed ‘carry-forward’ of weapons and unlocks from Modern Warfare 2.
The popular Zombies mode is getting a massive overhaul with the game taking place across the largest COD Zombie map yet. It’s an open world map with missions that will take you to different regions that escalate in difficulty, providing an extraction survival experience that will contrast with classic Zombies modes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III just got a gameplay reveal trailer — a slightly misleading title, given most of the footage is loaded with cinematics. Indeed, it is focused on the campaign, which sees Captain Price and his Task Force 141 take on the Russian ultranationalist war criminal Vladimir Makarov, as he extends his grasp across the world. Publisher Activision has introduced a new non-linear campaign structure called ‘Open Combat Missions,' memorable multiplayer maps, and a Zombies mode set in an open world. Pre-orders for the game are now live across all major platforms.
