Ghostbusters could be around for a long time.
Frozen Empire, the latest entry in the long-running franchise that kicked off in 1984, just blasted its way to a $45.2 million domestic box office opening following a $16M Friday and a $16.8M Saturday, perDeadline. The number is right below 2016’s non-canonical Ghostbusters starring Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, making Frozen Empire the second-highest opener for the series, not adjusted for inflation. These numbers also propel the Ghostbusters franchise past the $1 billion mark.
Worldwide, the Gil Kenan-directed picture starring Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray collected $16.4M from 25 markets, bringing its global opening to $61.6M. Imax accounted for $1.8M of the worldwide gross.
Audiences awarded the ghost-infested flick a B+ and an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, which doesn’t bode well for Frozen Empire’s long-term prospects, especially with Godzilla x Kong lurking. Still, the opening should be enough to convince Sony that ghost-busting is alive and well but perhaps in dire need of a more sure-footed direction.
Also opening was the supernatural thriller Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, everyone’s favorite star of the moment. The modest $10M NEON production opened with a solid $5.36M from 2,354 screens.
Likewise, IFC’s The Late Night with the Devil produced the biggest opening for the studio, raking in $2.83M at 1,034 locations.
All told, the cumulative box office was up a whopping 21% compared to last year when the mighty John Wick: Chapter 4 shot its way into the books.
As stated, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released this week. In its debut, the film is projected to sell $45M worth of tickets, making for a potentially exciting box office battle.

Do you remember the noughties fan warz over which game had the best terrain destruction physics? The victors of that particular forum skirmish were probably DICE's Battlefield games, with their woozy Frostbitten cinematography and dependable multiplayer tactic of having a whole team focus fire on a single capture point, gradually reducing it to stumps of foundation. But leftier souls may have preferred Volition's (RIP) Red Faction series, the third of which, Red Faction: Guerrilla, featured a granular demolition engine that you bash apart whole bases with a sledgehammer.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire shattered expectations with a staggering $80 million domestic opening, the second-biggest opening of the year behind Dune: Part Two’s $82.5M. Notably, it also marked the biggest opening for a MonsterVerse sequel and falls within the ballpark of the $93M earned by 2014’s Godzilla.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empiredirector Gil Kenan knows his way around a family-friendly horror movie. Kenan’s first film was the cult-classic animated flick Monster House, a spoopy horror tale involving a haunted house that eats people, and the three young kids who venture into its depths. It’s up there with Henry Selick’s Neil Gaiman adaptation Coraline in terms of how scary it gets while still walking the line of what’s acceptable for a kids’ movie.
Why can’t Hollywood make a proper sequel to Ghostbusters? That was the only running through my brain following Frozen Empire last weekend. After 40 years, three sequels, a remake, and a slew of animated TV projects, the best and brightest artists have yet to capture the magic of 1984’s classic comedy.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan has a promising update on that previously announced animated Ghostbusters series from Netflix.
In the late 90s, if you told me I would get three more Ghostbusters films, two with the original cast members, I would have shouted your name from the mountains the way Stilgar proclaims Paul Atreides as the Lisan al Gaib in Dune.
After reprising her role as Dana Barrett in a cameo appearance in 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver did not return in. She was notably absent along with Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully. The latter hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.
BitCraft: Age of Automata’s announcement way back in 2021 caused quite the commotion in the IGN community, and I’m not going to lie: I was sceptical. Though this survival-crafting sandbox MMO looked absolutely beautiful, I wanted to see some evidence of how exactly players are supposed to craft this world together from the ground up.
New found footage horror movie Late Night with the Devil took in an eerily fitting total at the box office over the weekend – and it has us pretty spooked.
Every blockbuster now comes with the expectation of post-credits or after-credits scenes that either serve as sequel teases or joke-filled stingers.
