A new Devil May Cry anime is coming to Netflix

More than a decade after Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas debuted in movie theaters, Street Fighter and Mega Man publisher Capcom pulled off something impressive: It made a direct sequel to the movie, with Burton’s blessing.

Bandai Namco today announces for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. The upcoming retro-inspired battle royale title supports 64 players in cross-platform multiplayer.

The Shiren series has long been a niche one even among the Mystery Dungeon titles. It’s Spike Chunsoft’s own entirely original take on Mystery Dungeon that isn’t based on existing properties such as Dragon Quest or Pokemon and has long since been popular in Japan but not quite as sought after anywhere else. The last entry we saw localized was a remake in the form of Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fates which was originally a DS title before it made its way to modern systems. The newest title, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island was originally announced as coming to Japan with no word on a localization. Fortunately fans no longer need to worry as we’ve finally gotten our confirmed English release for the title to make a splash onto Nintendo Switch next year. The new art style is no longer sprite based and instead entirely 3D models rather akin to the recent Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remake we had a few years back. This charming new take on Shiren seems absolutely packed full of life and is promising to bring back the classic gameplay and challenge that so many knew and loved it for.

Free PC games are always nice, so when one comes along that blends the stylish action game formula of Devil May Cry with dark fantasy aesthetics inspired by the likes of beloved anime Berserk, the Dark Souls series, and Final Fantasy, it’s a good time to take advantage. Capcom's ultra-stylish demon blaster Devil May Cry is back again, but in anime form. As part of Netflix's Drop 01 animation event, the streaming behemoth dropped a teaser for its upcoming DMC anime series—the one announced back in 2018—courtesy of Adi Shankar, a name you'll recognise from his work as showrunner and executive producer on another animated Netflix series based on a videogame: Castlevania. DMC is being produced by Studio Mir, of Legend of Korra fame.

Capcom has announced a Devil May Cry anime for Netflix, though a release date is yet to be confirmed. The teaser trailer shows Dante performing some acrobatic gunplay, and not much else. There is also a brief part of the soundtrack which sounds suitably heavy for a Devil May Cry based anime.

Devil May Cry is getting a new anime adaptation, Netflix has announced via a very brief teaser trailer. Capcom's beloved action series has always been an obvious candidate for such a project, and this one sounds promising. It's being crafted by South Korean animation outfit Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Dota: Dragon's Blood, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and more), and it's being spearheaded by Adi Shankar, who was the producer on Netflix's lauded Castlevania anime.

Netflix has been trying its hardest to make itself one of the “big names” in anime creation and adaptation. You might recall they just released a very successful live-action adaptation of a show featuring some Straw Hat Pirates. Well, not too long after that was released, they announced that they were going to make an anime-style adaptation of one of Capcom’s most famous franchises: Devil May Cry. That’s right, Dante is back, in animated form, and he will be tearing things up like only he can. While this isn’t the first time an animated series with Dante has been done, this one could have legs if it goes well.

Netflix held a new livestream called Drop 01, in which it focused on its new animated adaptations that are in the works — including several based on famous games franchises. Among other shows, it’s making animated series based on Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, Far Cry: Blood Dragon and the previously announced Castlevania: Nocturne. It also showed a first look at the new chapter of Sonic Prime.

Netflix hosted a Drop 01 livestream today, taking the opportunity to tease the Devil May Cry animated series. Capcom’s action series is coming to Netflix, with Castlevania producer Adi Shankar and Studio Mir (My Adventures with Superman) on board.
