Why Critical Role Should Move Away From D&D 5e For Its Next Campaign

The founders of Toys For Bob are making a sequel to their 1992 open world space game and it's just ended its crowdfunding campaign over 600% past its funding goal. 

After teasing an upcoming chapter inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, Dead by Daylight has revealed its next killer pulled from the pages of the fantasy pen-and-paper RPG: Vecna, long-running mega-baddie and inspiration for the Stranger Things villain. He’ll be voiced by Critical Role dungeon master Matthew Mercer and haunt a new dungeon map, where you’ll be able to do battle as new elf and bard survivors able to roll a literal d20 when they crack open treasure chests.

After rebooting Final Fantasy 7 as the trilogy of Remake, Rebirth and Really, You Went With That? (TBC), Square Enix are now planning to reboot themselves. Buried in the announcement of the launch of Critical Role’s new subscription service, Beacon, is more good news for fans. The third season of the troupe’s Prime Video animated series,The Legend of Vox Machina, is due out this fall. The release window was confirmed on X by Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham. Critical Role just announced Beacon, its new membership and streaming service that includes exclusive bonus content, early access to shows, and other premium perks. Run by Critical Role directly, this new service does not replace existing options like Twitch or YouTube, but is a different platform through which fans can support the company and its Dungeons and Dragons actual play shows.

The Critical Role actual play empire is expanding again. On Thursday, the group of Dungeons & Dragons-playing voice actors announced Beacon, a new membership program that promises to be “the most direct way” to support Critical Role. Beacon will offer “a wide range of exclusive and early access programming” among its member perks and, crucially, let Critical Role bypass third-party video services like YouTube and Twitch, where much of its content is streamed and hosted.

Nintendo has given the strongest indication yet that its next-generation console won’t stray too far from the existing Switch hardware.

Nintendo has announced plans to unveil a new flagship Switch console within this fiscal year, aiming to keep its momentum in the gaming market. The company, led by President Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed the successor to the ageing Switch will be revealed by March 2025. However, there won't be any specifics shared during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event in June.
