Bandai Namco has recently released a new update for Tekken 8, which brings a big character customization feature and a lot of balance fixes. Since its release, Tekken 8 has been a big hit for the developer, nailing and innovating on the best parts of the fighting game genre, and these updates show that Bandai Namco is busy trying to make the experience as good as it can be.
Tekken 8 is the much-awaited latest entry in the popular decades-old fighting franchise. Released in January 2024, the game has gotten universal acclaim from critics and fans alike, being hailed as a true evolution for the genre. Many have considered it easy to pick up and play but definitely challenging to master, proving its satisfying depth.
The new Tekken 8 update mainly brings the recently announced and somewhat controversial Tekken Shop, which had garnered quite a bit of backlash for introducing microtransactions. The Shop items include elements from legacy character costumes, avatar skins, and new items such as the UT collaboration shirts from clothing brand Uniqlo that celebrate the game's 30th anniversary. Both free and paid items will be available to purchase at the Tekken Shop, and players will need to buy Tekken Coins for the latter.
Meanwhile, the new Tekken 8 update also addresses cheating in multiplayer. High-ranking players who have been reported many times and confirmed by the team to have cheated were taken out of the leaderboard and had their ranks reset to Beginner. However, recently discussed plans to deal with rage quitters in Tekken 8have not yet been implemented, so players will have to deal with those for a little longer.
Other fixes in the new update include various small bugs in the Arcade Quest and Tekken Ball modes. It's also worth noting that any replay data recorded prior to Patch 1.02.01 will either be deleted or unplayable. There's also a bit of a long list of balance changes across specific characters and general moves and modes. These minor fixes, while unassuming on paper, may be interesting, as even small changes could lead to notable shifts in character gameplay rankings in the competitive scene.
All things considered, while Patch 1.02.01 introduces a notable feature to Tekken 8, it's still a relatively small update to the game. Fans who might have been waiting for a splashy change, such as new characters, will have to wait some more as it's early in the game's life cycle. The first confirmed Tekken 8 DLC character Eddy Gordo will likely release in March or April 2024, after which future additions will drop every quarter.

There are many “plights” in the video game industry that are affecting the various businesses that inhabit it. Just this week alone, two major publishers announced that they were laying off a combined 1500 people, and more are likely to come in March. Another issue is the cost of games and the amount of cash just being thrown at them in an attempt to be good and sell well. That’s one of the reasons for the layoffs, in fact. The other side effect of such actions, as being proven right now by Tekken 8, is that microtransactions are popping up everywhere. Much to the dismay of gamers as a whole.
