Tekken 8's upcoming Tekken Shop will include both paid and free content, Bandai Namco has confirmed, with the premium stuff using a currency called (creatively) Tekken Coins. The Tekken Shop will be refreshed monthly, and the developer insists the move is more about keeping the competitive fighter fresh with customisation items than for grubby monetary reasons. Still, there's no reason why it can't be both.

Tekken 8 has proven a smash hit with fans, selling millions of copies in its first week and delighting users on social media thanks to the game's in-depth customization options. Players can gather free in-game currency for just about everything that they do, and use it to purchase cosmetics such as outfits, accessories, hairstyles, and much more. However, it appears as though this might not be the only way to obtain cosmetics in the near future.
Unlike rival titles such as Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, it seemed as though Tekken 8 had managed to avoid the allure of microtransactions, but that looks like it's about to change pretty soon. First spotted by Twitter user IAMOP, the next big update for the game will introduce something called a "Tekken Shop", though the in-game alert doesn't explain how this new feature will function.
It's assumed that the Tekken Shop will be a place where people can buy more cosmetics for their favorite characters and avatars, but fans fear that Bandai Namco is about to start charging real money for these items. While not specifically stated that the Tekken Shop will be built around microtransactions, the update has revealed that the game's ESRB rating has been altered to include a warning of "in-game purchases".
We will probably hear more about what this Tekken Shop will actually include and how it will work during the recently announced Tekken Talk event which is taking place on February 20
Obviously, if the Tekken Shop were to only offer cosmetics for in-game currency, Bandai Namco would have no need to update the game's ESRB rating. With both Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 offering paid cosmetics, it's not too surprising that Tekken 8 is headed in that direction as well, though it does feel slightly sinister that they're being added as post-launch rather than something that was built-in to begin with.
Fortunately for Bandai Namco, it appears as though the concept of paid cosmetics isn't something that is being frowned upon by the game's community. Most fans on social media seem to welcome the idea of having more customization options in addition to the fairly bulky amount of options already included in the game, but only if they're appropriately priced.
Both Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 have come under fire in recent months over predatory monetization, with the former forcing players to buy more currency than they'd like for costumes and the latter having popular cosmetics come and go in a rotating store, taking advantage of players via FOMO. Pricing has also been a big issue in both titles, so hopefully the folks behind Tekken 8 can look at and learn from these mistakes to give us a fairly priced Tekken Shop and avoid pointless controversy.
