Good news for The Elder Scrolls 6: Bethesda tried a new testing process with Starfield and Todd Howard says it worked so well that it's the new standard

Starfield was extensively playtested by Bethesda devs often working from home, and Todd Howard says this approach worked so well that the studio's going to apply the method to its future games, with the studio's next confirmed, albeit far-off project obviously being The Elder Scrolls 6.

How rain works in Starfield (and lots of other games)

Starfield players realized this week that their characters have rainclouds that follow them around planets, à la The Truman Show. Rain isn’t falling all over Neon, for instance — just wherever you roam. A Starfield player posted a photo using Starfield’s photo mode to Reddit, showing the block of rain around their character, and nowhere else.

I Fell Through the Map in Starfield and it Didn’t Break the Game

Bethesda’s RPGs are no stranger to bugs, with characters breaking established in-game rules by dashing across lethal radiation fields or simply not responding to dialogue. A common phrase fans of the developer’s games have adopted is “Bethesda’s bug,” which is what they say when the issue could be a bug or reframed as a feature that fits in with the world. Most of the time, reframing is necessary because the bug is never patched out.

Yes, you can spacewalk in Starfield, and yes, I am trying to build an asteroid outpost

Being a dedicated spacer I've never had much interest in the base construction aspect of Starfield, but that was before I learned that you can spacewalk by means of console commands, aka cheats. Reddit user WeirdConcern4666 made history on this front yesterday. Here's how you do it: 1) get up from the cockpit controls, 2) hit the tilde key to open the command console at the bottom of the screen, 3) type "player.setpos x 10" to teleport your character outside the ship, then hit return and 4) type "setgravityscale 0" to engage zero gravity and stop your character plummeting endlessly. Then hit the tilde key again to close the command console, and well, there you go.

How Elite Influenced Starfield and 40 Years of Space Games

“One of the first things I wrote in machine code was an expanding starfield. Just literally flying through it, and I found it mesmerizing. I thought ‘It has to be a game.’” That was the moment David Braben, co-creator of Elite and founder of Frontier Developments, changed space games forever. It was video games’ equivalent of the Big Bang, the birth of an idea that would eventually go on to shape four decades of space games and, eventually, Starfield.
