Sony has sold 40 million PS5s

From the looks of it, Sony has internally delayed a couple of first-party PlayStation 5 titles targeting a release during its current fiscal year.

The surprisingly emotional and strangely addictive “dystopian document thriller” Papers, Please just turned ten years old and has officially sold five million copies across multiple platforms throughout the past decade. To celebrate the milestone, developer Lucas Pope and his company 3909 LLC released a web game called LCD, Please that allows players to go through certain aspects of the original title.

Take-Two Interactive, the publishing company which owns both Rockstar Games and 2K, released its first-quarter financial results on August 8. There are some pretty impressive numbers in there.

Sony has reportedly begun rolling out public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. As per ResetEra user ArashiGames, chosen PS Plus Premium members will be able to stream select games at up to 4K resolution. While the company confirmed the addition of cloud streaming in June, it's only now that we're learning about the supported resolution. That said, it's unclear whether the maximum resolution refers to the in-game graphical fidelity or the streaming resolution, but a screenshot suggests that available resolutions are entirely dependent on the player's internet connection. The core idea is that you can play games from the cloud without actually owning or downloading any of them.

The Granblue Fantasy series made the decision to branch out into uncharted territories with the launch of fighting title Granblue Fantasy: Versus in the early months of 2020, and it’s a decision that seems to have paid off for Cygames.

Sony has begun beta testing cloud streaming PS5 games for some users.

Konami recently published a corporate update on its digital entertainment business, which is predictably dry reading—the company is «Creating New User Experiences» and «Focusing on Further Expansion and Stimulation of esports» and I'm already overdosing on buzzwords. There's one interesting titbit, however. Since its launch in July of 1987, the Metal Gear series has achieved 60 million total cumulative sales.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched to widespread critical acclaim, and it currently sits as one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic. It was predictable that this would be accompanied by strong commercial success, but we are now getting an even clearer picture of just how impactful Breath of the Wild’s sequel has been.

The Resident Evil franchise has exhibited incredibly long legs where its sales are concerned, and unsurprisingly, that continues to be the case. Capcom has updated its list of Platinum Titles, providing updated sales numbers for its Resident Evil games, and there have been some interesting developments.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 18.51 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2023. The updated sales figures for the open world title were announced by Nintendo during its recent quarterly earnings briefing. Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units within three days of release, and clearly, has continued to sell at an impressive rate in the weeks since then.

PlayStation 5 sales have increased 75% in the UK following its price cut.

Sony has kicked off a big PlayStation summer sale, with £75 off the list price on a new PlayStation 5 console, a saving that UK retailers are pushing that little bit further to take £80 off the price.
