Rumour: Sonic Frontiers 2 in the Works, Say Multiple Sources | Push Square

March was a good month for new games, as a number of fresh releases walked straight into the USA software charts. As per Circana (formerly NPD) analyst Mat Piscatella, it was Dragon's Dogma 2 that caught fire in March, claiming the crown as the month's best-selling title. The action RPG sequel is also the third best-selling game of the year, which is quite impressive.

Stellar Blade was the best-selling physical game in the UK last week, with its launch sales on PS5 being enough to see it top sales charts in the region. Sony and Shift Up haven't shared any official sales data just yet, but this marks a good start for the title, which holds the potential to sell well long-term. TopSpin 2K25 was another new entry in the UK sales chart last week, debuting in third place.

Revolutionary RPG Baldur's Gate 3 was the surpise hit of 2023; a confluence of contributing factors that led to Larian's creating a once-in-a-generation level experience. But Larian has left the building, moving onwards and upwards, and ultimate IP holder Hasbro has already made a $1 billion bet on internal game development.

There's been a lot of discussion surrounding the commercial success of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Questions were no doubt asked about the future of Watch Dogs when the latest game in the series, Watch Dogs Legion, underperformed both critically and commercially (even though its initial sales numbers might have hinted otherwise). The PS5 and PS4 open world title, which first launched in 2020, saw a lot of improvement through post-launch updates and DLC, but the damage had been done long before Ubisoft got around to fixing things.

Following the collapse of a «verbal agreement» reportedly worth $2 billion with the Saudi-funded Savvy Games, Embracer Group entered into a brutal nine-month restructuring programme that resulted in the loss of some 1,400 employees and the cancellation of dozens of unannounced games. CEO Lars Wingefors, whose actions were recently defended by Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch («give Lars a break»), in a new interview, says: «As a leader and an owner, sometimes you need to take the blame.»

Lords of the Fallen developer Hexworks has revealed the final free content drop in its post-launch roadmap will take the form of a roguelite modifier system, and it's available on PS5 today. When beginning a fresh playthrough or jumping into New Game+, you'll now have the chance to change the way the game plays and operates across seven modifiers.

Another Crab's Treasure might not look like a soulslike action RPG, but it is one. Take out the dark, oppressive nature of FromSoftware's output and replace it with SpongeBob, and you're more or less there. Purposely juxtaposing the established tropes of the genre, this title offers a fresh, more lighthearted experience without sacrificing the level of challenge you'd expect.

Since before Sonic Frontiers even launched, Sega made it abundantly clear that future instalments in the franchise would be building on the foundations laid down by the open world platformer, and with Frontiers having sold as well as it did, it’s safe to assume that the company is probably sticking to those plans. In fact, a direct sequel to Sonic Frontiers seems to be in development.

Sonic Frontiers 2 is reportedly currently in development at SEGA with the gameplay being a sequel to 2022's Frontiers gameplay-wise.
