Along with a new Performance Pass and Cosmetic Tree, Season 5 of Deep Rock Galacticwill allow players to access older content and cosmetics. This flexible approach to how Deep Rock Galactic handles season passes and unlockable items could become a model for how developers should approach time-limited content.
Deep Rock Galactic’s frantic dwarves-in-space co-op combat has earned it a dedicated player base since its early access release in 2018. As further proof of its enduring popularity, Deep Rock Galactic has just become one of the latest titles added to Xbox Game Pass Core. The game’s themed seasons have each included a free 100-tier Performance Pass filled with new cosmetic beards and armor, allowing players to customize their deep-space dwarves. Unlike many other live-service games, cosmetic items are not lost to the abyss upon a season’s completion, but rather recycled into the game’s shop and loot packs.
However, with the upcoming Season 5 of Deep Rock Galactic, Ghost Ship Games seems set to shake up this tried and tested battle pass formula with an ambitious way of handling old content. Along with the new season’s themed events, previous seasons will be available to play as separate game modes, each complete with their original Performance Passes and Cosmetic Trees. Players who have already partially progressed through these passes will carry on from where they left off, giving veterans the chance to chase down missed content and allowing new players to earn expired rewards. An alternative “vanilla” playlist will also be available, featuring a mixed bag of events from each season.
Similar approaches to how video games handle timed content are becoming more common as developers work to strike a balance between keeping hardcore players engaged and ensuring rewards remain achievable for a more casual audience. Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries took a similar approach in the latest installment of the iconic sci-fi shooter. Although the premium rewards in each of Halo Infinite’s season’s passes are locked behind paywalls, these battle passes remain permanently in the game, allowing players to freely choose which one they want to progress at any time. The game’s free-to-play multiplayer does feature smaller, limited-timed events, but the new shop and free currency coming to Halo Infinite will soon allow players to catch up on missed content. These moves help to make live service games – which have traditionally capitalized on gamers' fear of missing out – more accessible, letting players enjoy them at their own pace.
By bringing both original and old content to the dwarven space shooter, Season 5 of Deep Rock Galactic seems set to further improve one of the best co-op games out there. Before

We learned a bit about Deep Rock Galactic's upcoming Season 5 update a few weeks ago, and now we know a bit more thanks to a Ghost Ship dev stream. Not only has it gifted us details on the new mission type and the new season event, it's also given us an idea of when we might see Season 6 emerge. I suppose you could liken the stream to a bushy Dwarven beard, from which the devs pluck out announcements like it's show and tell. And the show and tell is set in a dingy mine. And there are multiple pints involved.

“Given the opportunity, players will become a merciless egg baron and sit chuckling on a throne of shells while medieval Europe cowers beneath their imperious yolk,” is what I assume Soren Jonson once said, and it looks like Manor Lords is proving this timeless adage right once more. Despite shifting over a million units and hitting the highest concurrent player count of any ‘city builder’ on Steam, creator Greg ‘Slavic Magic’ Styczeń is already looking to the future of how the building game handles trade.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has added Manor Lords to its thriving content library. This is the fifth day-one release on Microsoft's subscription service in April 2024, as well as the 56th title to reach Xbox Game Pass Ultimate since the turn of the year.

There’s an uncomfortable sense among the gaming community, as industry layoff numbers stack up, project after project is cancelled, and as console life cycles slow, that we’re on the cusp of a bit of a video game dry spell. That feeling isn’t totally unfounded - there are very few AAA game release dates announced for the second half of this year, and the AA market isn’t exactly hopping either. All three console communities - Switch, Xbox, and Playstation - are feeling empty on the games front right now, and only the Switch has the excuse of a new box being imminent. And even that’s still technically just a rumor!
