Metaphor: ReFantazio is the next big title to be released this year by developer Atlus, and it recently gave us a bunch of new details and a release date to get us all nice and excited about this October. Over the past 24 hours, Atlus has been showcasing gameplay and answering questions about Metaphor, which is where it was revealed that the game will not feature any romance options.
Being developed by Atlus and led by one of the main men behind modern Persona, a lot of elements from those games feature in Metaphor. Turn-based combat, an emphasis on time, and a stylish UI are all present in Metaphor, which had some asking whether the series' Social Link mechanic would be making the jump as well.
According to a comment from the developer during the Metaphor: Stalker Club Final live stream (translated by Persona Central), a Social Link system is in place, but it will differ from the Persona series. Instead of forming bonds and then eventually taking that relationship to further levels, whether it be romantic or not, players will instead deepen the relationships with people they meet on their journey to have them become "supporters".
All hope isn't lost for you hopeless romantics just yet though. Many have pointed out that while Metaphor won't let you actually choose someone to romance, it doesn't mean there's absolutely no romance in the game at all. Unlike the Persona series, the main character of Metaphor is fully voiced and isn't silent, suggesting he has more of a role in the story, and isn't just a blank canvas for players to project themselves onto.
A canon romance is still very possible, and honestly would be a little more meaningful than the romance options in Persona games. Just due to the fact that they're optional, Persona romances often have very little bearing on the story as a whole outside a few dialogue options and the odd special cutscene.
Or (hear me out), Metaphor: ReFantazio could simply have no romance in it at all and Atlus just wants to tell a different story. Either way, we won't know for sure what Atlus has planned for the game's story until it's in our hands, but at least we do know that you won't be getting your pick of the game's characters if romance is on the cards for our potential monarch.

's greatest strength is its cast of characters, especially its romance options. Charming, memorable, and fun, ’s characters are a diverse bunch, ranging from intrepid reporters to synthetic detectives to murderous bare-knuckle boxers. Interestingly, allows for an actual romance this time around, unlike ' variety of fade-to-black one-night-stands. Still, spending the night with any romance option will reward players with the Lover's Embrace perk in , which grants a temporary experience boost.
Atlus' upcoming RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, seems built around systems that wouldn't feel out of place in the developer's Persona series. It's got turn-based battles that hinge on striking enemy weaknesses, it's got warrior spirits that you can summon in combat, and — most crucially to this article — it's got a bonding system where you can hang out with key characters, learning more about them in the process.
Coming from the creative leads of Persona 3, 4, and 5, Metaphor: ReFantazio is obviously borrowing plenty of elements from the Persona series, but Atlus’ upcoming RPG is also going to put its own twist in that formula in a number of ways, appropriately enough for an entirely new IP. Take, for instance, its blend of real-time and turn-based combat mechanics, or how it will handle exploration throughout its map. Another area where the fantasy RPG will differ from Persona games is how it’ll handle bonds.
Romance has factored into many Bethesda games over the years, everything from The Elder Scrolls to Starfield. So, it's no surprise, then, that Fallout 4 has plenty of characters whose hearts can be won over. You just need to know how to press the right buttons.
Metaphor: ReFantazio won't have any romance options whatsoever, in a stark contrast to past Persona games.
Hot off its showcase for Metaphor: ReFantazio, where it revealed cities, exploration, dungeons and whatnot, Atlus has announced Atlus Fes for June 8th and 9th in Bellesalle Akihabara, Tokyo, from 10 AM to 6 PM JST. It will feature playable demos forReFantazio and evenShin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance.
The release date for Metaphor: ReFantazio has been confirmed during a 30-minute developer livestream.
Atlus has announced that its next game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, will launch on October 11 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
As one of the Treehouse's resident Atlus sickos, I was incredibly happy to wake up to 25-minutes of Metaphor: ReFantazio's director Katsura Hashino talking us through some new footage. We get a look at a new rural town and the activities you can get up to, like bounty hunting. Travel on your magic mech is compared to "camping", which I wasn't expecting. And there's lots of combat on show, with transitions from real-time to turn-based battles outlined in a bit more detail. Oh and it's coming out in October, which gives me plenty of time to clear my JRPG backlog before this inevitably takes over my entire existence for the foreseeable.
Along with announcing an October release date for Metaphor: ReFantazio, Atlus has revealed a bunch of new details on the fantasy RPG’s combat and dungeons, cities and exploration, and much more. In addition to that, with pre-orders for the title going live today, the company has also revealed a physical Collector’s Edition that players will have the option of picking up.
Atlus first teased that it was working on a new RPG with a fantasy setting in mid-2023 — it also said way back then that it will be available sometime this year. Now, the developer has revealed that the game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, will come out on October 11 at a special livestream event. Katsura Hashino, the director of the game, as well as of Persona 3, 4 and 5, also introduced a 30-minute hands-on gameplay that gives you quite a lengthy look at its story and combat mechanics. Similar to the Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio has a turn-based combat system with what Atlus says is a «blend of real-time action.»
