Apple has typically used smaller batteries for its 6.1-inch ‘Pro’ models, and the iPhone 15 Pro is no exception. The company may stick with similar specifications for the iPhone 16 Pro, as the prototype’s battery has allegedly leaked, showing a smaller capacity but covered by a metal shell, which will have its advantages.
The details posted by Kosutami mention that the iPhone 16 Pro prototype’s battery features a 3,355mAh capacity, which is converted to 13.02WHr, with a Limited Charge Voltage of 4.48V. Assuming Apple sticks with this same capacity, it will be a negligible upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro’s 3,274mAh battery, making it a measly 2.48 percent difference for next year. While the iPhone 16 Pro prototype’s cell might be unimpressive, the tipster mentions some other changes here.
For instance, instead of a glossy surface, the battery now sports a frosted metal shell and features a redesigned connector, though the L-shape of the cell remains unchanged compared to the iPhone 15 Pro’s. Incorporating a metal shell means that the iPhone 16 Pro might get a heat dissipation boost, with Kosutami mentioning earlier that Apple was testing out a ‘graphene thermal system’ for its next year’s iPhone lineup that also included a metal shell for the battery.

This year, Apple might have used its most advanced chipset for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is the A17 Pro that is mass produced on TSMC’s 3nm ‘N3B’ process, but it is of little use when the SoC starts throttling when running intensive applications. This is because Apple has not designed an effective cooling solution for the latest ‘Pro’ models, so the A17 Pro throttles when playing games such as Genshin Impact at the highest settings.
There were rumors that Apple was testing out a vapor chamber solution for future iPhones, which is the same cooler that the company’s Android phone competitors use to tame the temperatures of chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Unfortunately, we have not received any update from Apple’s supply chain regarding these vapor chambers. However, adding the metal shell for the battery should be a plus in providing a separate thermal chamber from which heat can be removed more efficiently.
