The map in Elden Ring is stupid huge.
I’ve gotten this feeling a lot in recent open-world games. The first time I zoomed all the way out on the map in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I sort of cackled and wept. It’s so big. And then when Assassin’s Creed Valhalla came out, the developers were like, “This map is even bigger!”
The new Zelda games have vast, varied landscapes. No Man’s Sky has all of space!
So when I first cracked open Elden Ring’s map and did my “I’m in danger” laugh, I wasn’t prepared for what FromSoftware did that sets it apart from other open world games with intimidatingly huge maps.
And it’s all about making the big feel big, and the small feel small.
In the video above, I talk about the architectural principles that FromSoftware uses to direct how we feel about the different spaces in Elden Ring. The way a space is designed changes how we interact with it, and how we feel. And in Elden Ring, the flow between different types of spaces is everything.

This is of course by design and has been the way ever since Demon's Souls, with FromSoftware always aiming to leave plenty of room for player interpretation: it's arguably one of the reasons that the lore of these games really sticks with people.

Elden Ring is a game constantly throwing up new mysteries, but one head scratcher involving a datamined sword had Elden Ring fans stumped for the past couple of months. Dataminers had discovered several icons depicting three unique swords, one encased in a stone sheath, and two more unsheathed and with intricate designs. After searching high and low for these mysterious weapons, fans had chalked these icons and swords off as cut content.
An Elden Ring fan has discovered that a sword cut from the game has, in fact, been right under our noses all this time.
Elden Ring has its fair share of monsters. There are stone faces melded onto sentient boulders, wandering soldiers with marionette cages for stomachs, and forlorn wanderers with worms for faces.

Following in the footsteps of Jimmy Choo’s Sailor Moon collection, and Loewe’s collaboration with Studio Ghibli, you can currently find a lineup of premium streetwear inspired by Elden Ring at Ark/8. Dubbed The Lands Between Collection, Ark/8 has delivered a fashion-forward lineup of apparel that has some select members of the Polygon staff turning out their pockets for extra runes.
