Epic Games Store is adding several features that should make installing games, shopping, and discovery of new titles easier and better for its users. The Epic Games Store reveal is adding some functionality that users have been clamoring for, as well as some additional benefits.
The Epic Games Store launched back in 2018 as a competitor poised to take on digital distribution platforms like Steam and Origin. One way that they chose to gain attention and new users was by regularly giving away free games to anyone registered with the service. The company has also drawn in developers by offering competitive revenue sharing and low commission fees. However, due to a variety of factors — including some missing features present on other platforms — Epic Games Store has yet to reach the same level of popularity as its biggest competitor, Valve's Steam.
Now, Epic Games Store has revealed new features that will be added to the service in the future. The reveal came at GDC 2024, where Epic announced that the storefront would be receiving an improved download manager, expanded store navigation, improved home page content, and a landing page carousel. Users will be able to have more control over where they install their games, allowing them to choose a folder for the title, and ways to monitor how much space is available and what games are prioritized when downloading.
The store itself is adding categories, which should greatly improve the experience of trying to find new interesting games to purchase and play. The improvements will also include featured hubs and game collections, as well as adding information about updates and news regarding the player's games, much like Steam does now. The homepage header and landing page carousel are designed to help draw attention to specific titles, sales, and any new features on the store. While these last two features likely have developers and publishers more excited than users, the overall improvements should make for an easier user experience that's more in keeping with what players have come to expect from other digital distribution platforms. This is especially important for mobile Epic Games Store users.
Unfortunately, Epic Games has not announced when these additions will be made to the service. With major gaming events coming up like the Summer Game Fest and discounts being common during the hotter months of the year, users probably won't have to wait long to gain access to these functions. It remains to be seen if it will be enough to draw users back to Epic Games Store over other services, but for those who are currently using the platform, it should make the experience much better.
