Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is bringing back the Budokai Tenkaichi series after 17 years, and we've got a brand-new gameplay trailer to celebrate. However, there's still no release date.
In the trailer, we see beam clashes, counters, battle damage, and a whole host of characters from the Turtle Master to Nappa brawling at high speeds. The Ultimate Blast move was also shown off, and producer Jun Furutani says it's stunning visuals were only made possible thanks to the improved capabilities of current-gen consoles.
In addition to close-range attacks with rush attacks and combos, we kept battle systems such as the Dragon Dash, which enables high-speed movement, the iconic counter system that fans know and love, as well as the 'Impact Action', which allows intense fisticuffs or the exchange of energy blasts.
The clash system was highlighted towards the end of Goku and Vegeta's fight. Our pure-hearted hero fires off a Kamehameha, but Vegeta counters it with a Final Flash, meaning the two moves collide mid-air. To win, you need to mash the triangle button. In this case, Goku overcomes Vegeta's Final Flash and pushes his beam right back at him to deal some serious damage.
While Sparking Zero seeks to honour the games that came before and iterate on fan-favourite mechanics, bringing them to life on newer hardware almost two decades later, it also has a few interesting ideas of its own that it's bringing to the table.
"After some consideration, we've tweaked some [of the core mechanics] and added new ones to better express the high-speed and authentic battles unique to the Dragon Ball action," Furutani said. "One of the biggest changes was to boost the normal movement, making it as fast as the dash in the previous title, and to allow a short dash that lets you move at lightning speed with a button that used to be for dashing.
"This change opens up more possibilities for movement, attacks on the go, and even more complex actions. In fact, you can perform various actions to suit your style, such as dodging an opponent's attack with a short dash, unleashing a charged attack or even a Ki Blast while moving, or linking to a Dragon Dash to pull off a huge move in one go."
While we don't have an official release date yet, Furutani said last month that they're aiming to release Sparking Zero between late 2024 and early 2025. It's been a long time coming, with the last Budokai Tenkaichi launching way back in 2007, but the wait is nearly over.

Is there a definitive geological difference between rock and stone? Google tells me the main consensus is that stones are just smaller rocks, which sounds like a flimsy distinction to base a catchphrase on. Anyway, colony survival game First Dwarf cares not for rock, only stone, along with the wood you’ll use as the building blocks of your colonies. This is me burying the lede deeper than the mines of Moria, of course, because First Dwarf also has a tiny talking dragon companion that sits on the shoulder of the giant dwarven mech you use to swing a hammer at horrible toxic shitlizards. The dragon learnt your language by sneaking herself in a library. Do go on, game.
