A fan-favorite Clone Wars character finally showed up in Ahsoka, and they’re voiced by a Star Wars legend

Star Wars has certainly had a fair share of fantasy elements baked into its DNA from the beginning. From its central “chosen one” monomyth to its deployment of the “special weapon” trope to a central plot arc that can be described as “storming a castle to rescue a princess,” Star Wars has never been a purely science-fiction story. Yet George Lucas has made it very clear that science-fiction stories like Buck Rogers and Frank Herbert’s Dunewere a much larger influence on him than the foundational fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Motivations in Star Wars aren’t often complicated. Which is making Ahsoka’s Baylan Skoll feel like a complete mystery — and probably a huge missed opportunity.

Grand Admiral Thrawn arrived when the Star Wars universe needed him most. With the movie series effectively dead after Return of the Jedi, author Timothy Zahn stepped in on assignment from Lucasfilm and its partner Bantam Spectra to come up with a Darth Vader-level character who could rival Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa in the post-Empire years, and an adventure that would resuscitate the biggest blockbuster franchise of all time with mere prose.
