The full game sequel to Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot is coming out on 6th September 2024 for PS5, with a huge number of world to explore and nods to popular PlayStation games and franchises.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly decided not to attend Gamescom 2024.

With the upcoming Astro Bot, developer Team Asobi is leaning hard on PlayStation easter eggs, with over 150 characters from other PlayStation franchises set to make appearances in the game, in addition to themed levels, cosmetics, and more. That is, of course, something that the IP’s previous outing, Astro’s Playroom, became known for as well, but should we expect this to become a franchise tradition going forward?

When pre-orders went live for Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, it was revealed that players would receive the Yharnam Hunter outfit early with the Deluxe Edition. Of course, you can unlock this by playing the game, but many were curious about its conclusion. The inclusion of Lady Maria from The Old Hunters DLC via a free update to Astro’s Playroom was also convenient.

New impressions for Team Asobi’s Astro Bot are available courtesy of PlayStation Blog, which went hands-on with an early preview build. While PlayStation confirmed over 80 levels spread across multiple galaxies, they’ll fall into one of three difficulties – Easy, Normal and Hard.

It was in 2018 with the launch of the incredible Astro Bot Rescue Mission that the mascot platformer IP really started gaining traction, while in 2020, the free PS5 pack-in tech demo Astro’s Playroom was also well received by players. Later this year, however, the series will be making its full console debut with Astro Bot– which, according to creative director and studio head at developer Nicolas Doucet, was always the plan.

Sony and developer Team Asobi billing Astro Bot is a big game, and with the game set to feature over 80 levels and over 300 bots to rescue at launch, it’s clear that it isn’t going to be lacking where content is concerned. As it turns out, however, Team Asobi has yet more content planned for the platformer that it will be adding post-launch.

Astro is back with his biggest adventure yet, and I had an opportunity to play about 40 minutes in an early preview. Team Asobi’s colorful platformer is brimming with stages featuring empowering new abilities, inventive obstacles, and exciting PlayStation character cameos. 

The recent announcement of Astro Bot has been met with plenty of excitement, and though all eyes are currently on the series’ first ever full fledged console instalment, its last outing has received a surprise new content drop as well.

Sony may not be releasing any flagship first-party games this year on the level of something like a God of War or Horizon, but there are several PlayStation Studios games lined up for release in the coming months nonetheless- and none that looks as promising and delightful as Astro Bot does. Announced last month, the 3D platformer is being billed as the series’ biggest outing ever, and with pre-orders having gone live today, details have now also emerged on its pricing.

Pre-orders go live for Team Asobi’s Astro Bot today, though it may already be available in your region. In a new PlayStation Blog post, studio head Nicolas Doucet details each of the editions while confirming that all players will receive a PaRappa the Rapper outfit and “Glorious Graffiti” paint color for the Dual Speeder early alongside two Astro avatars for free.

True to recent leaks, at the recent State of Play event, Sony and Team Asobi announced Astro Bot, the fan-favourite IP’s first full-fledged platformer for a console. Since its reveal, more details have been shared, with Team Asobi revealing that the game is going to feature more than 80 levels, over 70 new enemy types, and more. With that in mind, then, it’s no surprise to hear Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet describe Astro Bot as “a really, really big game”.

Sony held its State of Play showcase early Friday, where it made several new announcements on upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games. The PlayStation parent provided updates on some already announced games and came out with a few new reveals. As rumoured, Team Asobi is working on Astro Bot, a sequel to Astro's Playroom that is set to arrive later this year on PS5. The showcase also featured new trailers for live service shooter Concorde and horror titles Until Dawn and Silent Hill 2.

Among the many announcements at State of Play, Team Asobi’s Astro Bot is arguably one of the highlights. As a full-blown platforming adventure for PlayStation’s unofficial mascot, it features +80 levels to explore and over 15 new abilities. When you live in a world of leaks and rumours, everything can seem like a hint, and maybe that’s what’s happening here- but it sure does seem like Astro Bot developer Team Asobi is dropping some potential teases for an upcoming announcement… maybe?

Rumblings of a PlayStation Showcase (or some sort of PlayStation-focused event) have been growing louder, and with the event expected to be happening sometime before the end of this month, details around what announcements it’ll bring are continuing to leak and filter through as well. Multiple previous reports have, of course, claimed that a new Astro Bot game that is due out this year will be announced at the showcase, and another prominent leaker is now stating that reveal is coming soon.

Sony fans aren’t exactly in a great place this year. The current head of PlayStation, Hiroki Totoki, flat out confirmed that they don’t have any big scale first party AAAs scheduled to release for all of this financial year, and we are at month one of that period.

Journalist Jeff Grubb recently claimed that Konami and Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake is going to be showcased at an as-yet-unannounced PlayStation event in May, and another leaker is now corroborating that.

Sony said earlier this year that it wouldn’t be releasing any new instalments in existing major franchises until at least April 2025, and though that certainly sparked some concern in the PlayStation fanbase, it seems the company does have other, smaller things in store to make up for the lack of its typical flagship releases.

Though PS5’s first-party lineup for the coming months does feature the likes of Rise of the Ronin, Concord, Stellar Blade, and Until Dawn, as recently revealed by Sony, it won’t be receiving any new instalments in major existing franchises until at least April 2025. Even so, even in the absence of major, flagship releases on the level of something like a God of War or a Spider-Man, it seems like the console still has some notable first-party games for players to look forward to that haven’t yet been announced.

Astro Bot hasn’t seen a major, flagship release so far, but though it doesn’t stand on the same footing as many of Sony’s other first party franchises, it’s still got a sizeable fanbase. Hugely responsible for that was Astro Bot Rescue Mission, with the PS VR-exclusive platformer having been widely by critics and audiences in the years since its launch. And it seems Sony may be looking to bring it to its current-gen VR headset, too.
