NVIDIA Ends GeForce GTX 16 GPU Production As The Era of GTX Series Comes To A Close

NVIDIA has finally ended the production of its GeForce GTX 16 series GPUs, the last of the "GTX" line of cards for the masses.

It's All "RTX" From Now Onwards As NVIDIA Ends GeForce GTX 16 GPU Production, The Last of The Decade-Long Family

Back in December, we reported that NVIDIA was planning to end the production of its remaining GeForce GTX 16 series GPUs by Q1 2024 & it looks like the company has indeed discontinued the lineup and suspended all delivers of its GTX 1660 SUPER, GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1650 Ti, GTX 1650, GTX 1650 SUPER, & GTX 1630 graphics cards.

The NVIDIA "GTX" branding has been around for a long time with the first cards to use this naming convention going back to the GeForce 7 & GeForce 8 era with the likes of the 7800 GTX and the 8800 GTX however, the company started to utilize this naming properly with its GTX 200 and GTX 400 series which are more than a decade old. The cards existed besides the GeForce GTS and GT series which had long been abandoned (GT did serve the low-tier market for some time).

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX branding lived on till the GeForce 10 series after which it was gradually replaced by the new "RTX" branding following the launch of the GeForce 20 series which ushered the Ray Tracing and AI era for the company. The last of the GeForce GTX cards was the 16 series which was released alongside the RTX 20 series and served the mainstream segment but the era finally concludes in 2024. We have seen some great cards within the GeForce GTX lineup such as the iconic GTX 680, GTX 980, the GTX 1080 Ti, and even the GTX Titan series which were great GPU offerings in their regards. The following are the proper GeForce GTX families:

• GTX 200 Series: Tesla
• GTX 400 Series: Fermi
• GTX 500 Series: Fermi Refresh
• GTX 600 Series: Kepler
• GTX 700 Series: Kepler Refresh
• GTX 900 Series: Maxwell
• GTX 10 Series: Pascal
• GTX 16 Series: Turing

It's been 6 years since the introduction of the NVIDIA RTX series and we have so far seen a total of 3 families within the lineup, the RTX 20 (Turing), RTX 30 (Ampere), & RTX 40 (Ada Lovelace). The next chapter is expected to begin later this year with the RTX 50 (Blackwell) lineup as indicated in recent rumors.
