Baldur's Gate 3 studio confirms two new projects: "Will be our best work ever"

Veteran RPG developers have weighed in on how Baldur's Gate 3 has (or hasn't) affected how they approach their own games.

A Baldur’s Gate 3 player online is taking no chances in Honour Mode, summoning an army of 88 monsters to help them complete the game. Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered to be the game’s greatest challenge, but this team composition would certainly make things a little easier to handle.

The Baldur's Gate 3 team has expressed a feeling of "closure" after the juggernaut game completed its victory lap. 

The developer behind the popular, award-winning and slightly bawdy Baldur's Gate 3 confirmed that it won't be doing Baldur's Gate 4 — but it does have other irons in the fire.

Having put together one of the greatest RPGs in a generation last year, the Belgian developer won't be making any new narrative content for the third iteration or creating a Baldur's Gate 4. Instead, it's two brand new games, which CEO Swen Vincke is calling the studio's «best work ever».

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a massive success for developer Larian Studios, but the developer recently made the surprising announcement they won’t be following up with Baldur’s Gate 4, or even DLC for BG3. Instead, they’ve vowed to focus on new original IP and projects. That’s a noble, albeit risky, goal, although beyond some musing about likely doing the early access thing again, we haven’t heard much about what this next step for Larian will entail.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been the biggest success story Larian Studios has seen to date, having enjoyed universal critical acclaim and impressive sales to match, but with its next steps, the developer is looking to head into uncharted territories. Larian founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke revealed last month that the studio’s next game wouldn’t be related to the Dungeons and Dragons IP, and the team has now provided further tidbits on where it’s headed next.

Larian aren’t just not making Baldur’s Gate 4 – they’re treating Baldur’s Gate 3’s success as an opportunity to develop their own intellectual properties, with two new games in the works. These games will build on the “sensibilities” of Baldur’s Gate 3 in being “immersive experiences shaped by your choices”, but by the sounds of things, they won’t be adaptations of anybody else's narrative or setting. Divinity: Original Sin 3? It’s the obvious call, but come now, free your mind. How about a kart racing game, Larian, or a banging old school mascot platformer? When are you going to make a platform game, Larian?

Baldur’s Gate 3 took the gaming world by storm in 2023. With a dense, resonant story populated by complex and lovable characters, frankly unbelievable player freedom, and a low barrier to entry whether you were familiar with the franchise or not, Larian Studios proved that there’s still a huge, hungry audience for the massive single-player adventure role-playing game.
