This year’s Xbox Games Showcase was a bit of a treat for fans of chainsaws and chest-high cover. Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set during the earliest days of the Locust invasion, is set to throw us back into the boots and bandana of original protagonist Marcus Fenix. It’s an interesting direction; we’re coming up on the fifth anniversary of Gears 5, meaning it’s been nearly half a decade since Kait’s story was left on a cliffhanger. But throwing back to the era of the original trilogy has me thinking that developer The Coalition is taking the chance to look backwards as much as it does forward for what comes next. With E-Day, I hope Gears of War can rediscover its '80s and '90s summer blockbuster-style sense of fun.

Gears of War: E-Day was a surprise and welcome announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase that took place on 9th June 2024, and naturally fans of the series are clambering to find out when the game will be released.

The Coalition and Gears of War made their eagerly-awaited return at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase. However, instead of the oft-rumored Gears 6, it dished out Gears of War: E-Day. Exploring the origins of E-Day from the perspective of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, it’s a prequel that will “shape the future” of the franchise.

Xbox Game Pass is arguably the best deal in gaming right now. Since Microsoft debuted the service in 2017, many have hailed it as a win for consumers. One of the major draws of the service was the company’s promise that any Xbox exclusive titles would be available on Game Pass at launch. Day-one access to exclusive games would normally be a major upside for any similar gaming subscription. While the offer still beats the subscription offerings of Sony and Nintendo in many respects, the lack of compelling exclusive games on Xbox is making that monthly commitment harder to justify.

This new mainline entry will feature everything fans have come to love about the series alongside fresh experiences only achievable on the newest hardware.

True to leaks and speculation, Microsoft unveiled a new Gears of War game at the recent Xbox Games Showcase, though rather than announcing Gears 6, the company instead announced a prequel in the form of Gears of War: E-Day. Even so, in spite of the fact that the game will not advancing the series’ ongoing story and isn’t a numbered entry, Microsoft and developer The Coalition have emphasized that the upcoming shooter isn’t a spinoff or a side entry, and is instead being developed as a full-fledged mainline Gears of War game.

Leaks had strongly insisted in recent weeks that the next Gears of War game would be announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, and as expected, we did indeed get our first look at the series’ next mainline instalment- though it isn’t taking the form that many would have expected.

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, The Coalition announced Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to the Gears of War series. The game takes place 14 years before the start of the first game, and is built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5. However, there is no release date, but it will presumably launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

I often regret that I didn't get into football as a kid (note for people across the pond: football is what we call soccer in these here accursed, eternally post-imperial isles).
