The Kingdom Hearts games are held near and dear by many, but if you've yet to dive into the series or simply want to relive the magic, we have the Kingdom Hearts games in order of release and chronologically to help get you started!
The unique blend of Final Fantasy-like gameplay with Disney favourites was an odd proposition at first, but the pairing of beloved characters in a new, compelling original universe was a winning combination.
With Kingdom Hearts 4 under way, it would be prudent to get up to speed with the story, as it is chock-full of twists and turns. Mercifully, the games have been repackaged and remastered, making them really easy to play on modern systems.
Soon, too, Steam users will be able to play Kingdom Hearts on PC, as Square Enix is finally bringing the saga to Valve's storefront on 18th June.
With all that said and done, let's get to it!
If you want to play Kingdom Hearts series in order of release, below is how to do it with the year of its first release given:
The first game released for the series remains the best one to play if you want a good introduction to the world on offer. And you will definitely get a sense of the kind of storytelling that you are in for by starting here as it wastes little time in showing how much they are willing to cram into the complex story.
If you do get into the PS2 title, and it is a great story, then you will instantly want to crack on with the next, which picks up immediately from the end of this one.
If you are into the story, you will want to play this one — even if it is a totally different beast to the previous entry in the series. This is more of a card-based strategy game and while that is far from what you would have just played, this will give you important story information that will become key to the game that you will play next.
Originally released for the Game Boy Advances, it was remade for PS2 and released as Kingdom Hearts: Re: Chain of Memories and can be played on modern systems as part of The Story so Far or 1.5/2.5 ReMIX collections.
People may have loved the first game, but it was Kingdom Hearts 2 that really captured the attention of gamers with some extremely positive reviews coming along when it was released in Japan in 2005 before seeing a worldwide release in 2006.
As well as expanding on stories started in the previous two titles, this one sets up new questions too and you will be best placed to keep up with it all if you took the time to play Chain of Memories. We highly recommend doing so because this second main entry in the Kingdom Hearts series is well worth playing.

As the potential release date of the long-awaited Switch 2 inches ever-closer, every move Nintendo makes has started new rumors for what the upcoming console could feature. The President of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed consumers will hear news of this next-gen console before the end of the current fiscal year, meaning the console is expected to be unveiled before the end of March 2025.
players are now likely very accustomed to dealing with The Enclave and its attempts to take control of the Wasteland but one player has managed to make the faction's mission of domination all the more real by giving it an actual real-life target. While The Enclave may not have been a key player in the original version of, the paramilitary group was the focus of the game's most recent next-gen update which added an entire quest line dedicated to investigating the organization. As it turns out, with the right name their goal becomes much funnier.
I could pretend I understand Square Enix's action-RPG series Kingdom Hearts, but I don't need to, 'cos what I do understand is how popular it is. Until fairly recently the nearly 15-game-strong series, where Disney characters cross over with Final Fantasy and go to war alongside a child wielding a key (I said I don't properly understand it), wasn't on PC. After some games arrived on the Epic Games Store in 2021, Squeenix have confirmed that multiple Kingdom Hearts games are coming to Steam next month, on June 13th. Unlucky for some, maybe, but not Donald Duck and Goofy, two of the main characters. Long has Goofy been seen as just a joke character in the minds of people people who didn't watch A Goofy Movie. Hopefully this brings his heroism to a wider audience.
I woke up this morning to perhaps the most important low-key video game news of the year. The Kingdom Hearts series is finally hitting Steam.
The PC version of has been locked away on the Epic Games Store ever since 2021 but fortunately, those patient Steam users who held out hope that the series would one day land on Valve's storefront have been rewarded. A bizarre mash-up of Disney and, the adventures of Sora, Donald, and Goofy have leaped from platform to platform ever since the original game debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2002. It took nearly two decades for the trilogy, and the various spinoffs, to drop on PC but even then, Epic's exclusivity was a dealbreaker for many.
